    Stokes 33, Buttler 46

Another fluent cover drive brings Buttler a ninth boundary. Ashwin then spins one sharply into the right-hander to remind him there are still dangers to be found, plus the fact that 378 still need to be scored and there is still a day left after this.

The one they are all talking about to come in for England is Rory Burns of Surrey, another left-hander. He is not the prettiest of players but it doesn't matter how they look it's how many you score.

Well now we know Bairstow is going to bat, we can see him padded up in the pavvy. Maybe he won't get in today, the Buttler cover drive is looking in excellent fettle, bringing him another single off Bumrah. There's a cue for an edge to second slip if ever I've seen one.

That was not a poor ball. Stokes decided after defending for a long time he was going to play that sweep in front of square.

  5. Eng 138-4published at 51 overs

    Target 521

Stokes brings out the sweep again to Ashwin and he hits it cleanly for his fourth boundary, before clipping a full length one neatly through mid-wicket for two more.

Great to see a team on tour competing! Actually feel India have been a bit unlucky so far. Remember they started the tour missing their best two seamers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah as well as their first choice keeper Wriddiman Saha. Then the first test could have gone either way and I think this Test shows that if they had won the Test at Lord's England would have folded just as easy.

That's a bold idea from Keith, Eoin Morgan in the Mike Brearley role. Stokes can be Ian Botham, Jimmy=Bob Willis. Just a shame the next match is at Southampton and not Headingley. The India 12th man brings out a box of cashew nuts, I prefer them with a bit of black bean sauce. They are high in magnesium apparently. I thought it was meant to help you sleep. Doesn't work for me though. Bumrah skips in for the 50th over of the innings but no alarms for England as they continue their resistance in the afternoon sunshine.

If Bairstow is out for the next Test, bring Morgan in and give him the captaincy.

No cigar. Bat into boot, but then into the pitch before it is caught by the close fielder.

Increasing confidence from Stokes and he is waiting on one knee to sweep for four. But what have we here? Is this is a freak dismissal caught off a boot? The umpires want to look at it.

It is possible to bat out there, we have discovered. They have had their moments of good fortune, Buttler in particular.

Buttler has shown a fair bit of restraint. Stokes is blocking furiously. Two of England's strikers of a ball are showing the way.

The first hour of the session negotiated then. Buttler has now passed 100 minutes at the crease, the longest he has batted in a Test match is 192 minutes, when he made 76 on the last tour of India in December 2016.

Fielders need to understand that when the ball gets older they need to come up a bit.

Another edge from Buttler falls a yard short of Pujara at first slip and bowler Bumrah urges the fielder to come further forward. Buttler slices another boundary safely wide of the slip cordon, the requirement is now under 400 and the players will take a drink. What are you going to do Francis?

We've seen Ashwin dismiss Alastair Cook with some superb deliveries and despite his injury troubles he spins one sharply away from the left-handed Stokes, beating the defensive push.

The bustling Bumrah returns from the Pavilion End with that quirky straight-armed action of his and a short one outside off-stump is shovelled in unusual fashion over mid-wicket by Buttler for two more. Just when you thought it was safe to come out from behind the sofa there is another edge, but it does not carry and bisects the keeper and first slip to bring Buttler a fortuitous seventh boundary.

This has been a bit more like it. Stokes and Buttler have shown some spirit and discipline. It is not that hard.

Ashwin, having been off the field again earlier in the day with that hip problem of his, returns from the Radcliffe Road End. Just the four overs for four in the innings before this one. He's got two slips squeezed in there and a silly point under the helmet but Stokes flicks him comfortably away for two to bring up the 50 partnership from 117 balls, warmly appreciated by the crowd in the afternoon sunshine.
