Ashwin will bowl the last over before lunch.

But that's wreckless. Maybe Buttler hasn't learned. He follows those two boundaries with another after chasing a wide one. The India fielders scream catch but Rahane can't get there.

The crowd applauds but there's a bit of a murmur in there too. A few people might have been muttering "what is he doing?".

Now Buttler is reaping the rewards for his patience. You'd think people had been telling England this for years.

After letting the ball go for a while he then gets two straighter deliveries. One is pulled for four and the other is tickled for another boundary to fine leg.

Since the start of 2016 England have been 100-4 or less 31 times out of 62 innings.

India need six wickets to win

Stokes has company around the bat with a silly point, gully and slip in place. They're all chirping away like parrots.

Stokes gets off strike after looking relatively at ease. Buttler has to face one ball and gets an edge just past one of those fielders. The India players like that.

Ashwin doesn't look totally comfortable but isn't grimacing like yesterday.

Ross Harrison: If we’re going to return to 90s style regular collapses, maybe we should get rid of Ramps as batting coach. Then bring him back for short spells over the next few years, because it just seems like his coaching has to click eventually.

With Stokes on strike, spinner Ravichandran Ashwin as coming on for his first bowl of the day.

He has been struggling with a hip injury.

Ironic cheers from the crowd as Buttler breaks the run of dots with an edgy four.

England's selector duo of Ed Smith and James Taylor are watching on again, looking slightly more somber than what we've seen in previous weeks.

    10 minutes until lunch.

Stokes too isn't interested in playing shots. His strike-rate is down at just 11 after blocking out another maiden.

To be fair this is what England fans want to see.

Puneet Sharma: It's unfair and unjustified to finger point immediately at the English batters. They are 2-0 up. Two top teams are playing against each other, one would expect comebacks so just wait for England batters to come back.

I know Ollie Pope is young and inexperienced but what on earth is he doing here?

    Buttler 2, Stokes 2

For now Buttler looks to be playing the situation. He lets an over from Shami go by outside the off stump. That's the fourth maiden in a row I believe.

Dave Amitri: Why do we take our best player, assume they'll make the best captain and stand by and watch as they become our worst player? The two things must be linked to Root's form.

Seb Waddington: Ramprakash has to go. He clearly can’t get the best out of this batting line-up which is infuriating to watch because they should be half decent on paper.

Steven Shaw: Enough is enough. The whole England top order needs sweeping away and replacing. otherwise, we'll be giving them a licence to fail while others, like Curran, are dropped. How many more times do they need to be four down for under 100 before action is taken?

    Sightscreen

Big fan of this view, which is from inside the Trent Bridge pavilion. From the outside, the windows are painted white to act as a sightscreen and stop batsmen being distracted from what is going on inside. From inside, you can barely tell the difference.

Pandya has found a bit of nip straight away. Ben Stokes now has a big red mark on his bat right on the edge. Luckily for Stokes the ball goes down because he wasn't flashing hard like the batsmen before him.

Ciarán Tragheim‏: It seems we are getting to the point next year where England could win the World Cup, but lose the Ashes at home. If that were the case, what could the reaction from the ECB be? It surely couldn’t be one of success. Could they still claim Test cricket is the pinnacle?

Hardik Pandya is coming on looking to add to his 5-28 in the first innings.
