    Root 13, Pope 16

Moeen Ali has just reached his 150 for Worcestershire at Scarborough. I fancy we might see him in the fourth Test.

Mohammed Shami is up at 89mph. Quick. Pope leaves well outside off. Shami has his hands on his head after the 20-year-old lets one go by but that was perfectly safe. Good.

Leon Lewis: Pope looks like a real talent and this side might ruin him by forcing him to start his career batting in a position/way he has never had to before. Other players need to take responsibility, at least two of Bairstow/Buttler/Stokes should be in before the lad.

Why does Joe Root play this shot? How many time have we seen him edging really full and wide balls through to the wicketkeeper? He's not even trying to hit the ball for four, just blocking it. Mitchell Starc got him out like that if I remember rightly. He does it again and the India fielders appeal for a catch but he hit the ground not the ball.

It's an uncomfortable over for Root. He almost chips a full toss to Ashwin at mid-on but it falls short.

You have to say as opening batsmen Cook and Jennings should not have been hanging their bats outside the off stump.

Keaton Jennings lasted just five balls this morning. Cook didn't stick around much longer...

Careful, Joe. England's skipper plays a lazy waft that could only see him get into trouble if he had hit it. The Indians are encouraged by seeing a shot as silly as that.

That's drinks. 39 runs have been added this morning. India have taken two wickets.

Both Pope and Root have played nicely in a low-risk way and all of a sudden they are starting to get a bit too busy. It is such a fine margin but I like to see them not giving India anything.

Ooooh. Almost my fault. An inside edge saves Pope from looked like a certain lbw.

It's still overcast at Trent Bridge. There's no big swing for Bumrah, though. I wonder whether we'll see Pandya soon. He took five in the first innings of course. Root was one of those.

Without being too negative, where is the future for this England side? Anderson is top quality and Bairstow is undoubtedly a better player than two years ago. But Root, Cook, Broad and Stokes have either stagnated or even regressed. Compare the development of Kohli and Smith into world quality players to Root who has not done so.

One boundary for Root brings a second. It has not been the best start from Shami and he knows it. His expression shows it too. Root keeps the strike with a quick single.

Am I allowed to say that these two now look comfortable?

Ravichandran Ashwin has just managed to drag himself down the pavilion stairs and on to the field. He's moving with all the mobility of a man whose shoelaces have been tied together.

  13. Eng 55-2published at 19.2 overs

Nice from Root. He's been out there almost 50 minutes but now has his first boundary. It's a flick off the pads that almost hits the shins of the square-leg umpire.

This is going to be a good change because Ishant and Bumrah just angle it in to the right handers. By having a Shami or Pandya you are going to get someone to move it away.

  15. Eng 51-2published at 19 overs

    Target 521

This is a test for young Ollie Pope. Virat roars his bowler on after a bouncer towards the throat of the Surrey batsman. Pope responds well. He flicks a leg-side delivery from Bumrah down to fine leg for four.

We're going to have the first bowling change of the day. Mohammed Shami is replacing the wicket-taker Ishant.

I certainly hope it doesn't end for Cook with someone knocking on his door and saying 'sorry Alastair that's enough'. But you do get to the stage that you have to be open and honest about how you're feeling and playing.

You're right. I still think we're yet to see India's best bowler in the series in Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Sudeep Das: What would have happened if Bhuvi was fit to play this Test series? Wish there was a parallel universe. Good to see that our bowers have outgunned the English by about 10kmph which has made a difference as well.

My personal cricket-playing experience is limited, I certainly haven't had to bat for my country in a Test match. There's a lot of talk about mindset in this situation but surely England's batsman are best thinking really selfishly. Just go out thinking, 'I'm going to score a hundred. I don't care what happens at the other end.'

Easier said than done I guess.

Root and Pope rotate the strike well with three singles in the latest Ishant over.

What I want to see from England today is to make India bowl a good ball to get them out - don't gift them wickets.
