Alastair Cook looked to be leaving the ball well and waiting patiently for the bad ball to put away.

He did it three times but the guided the fourth bad ball he got into the hands of Virat Kohli at third slip, the India captain completing a fine catch...

Jonny Bairstow came in at number four, promoted up the order as he is playing as a specialist batsman in this Test, unable to keep due to a broken finger sustained at Trent Bridge.

It was a short-lived and scratchy innings, the Yorkshireman setting up outside leg and drawn into nicking one from Jasprit Bumrah that angled in and nibbled slightly away...

Joe Root has looked out of sorts in this series and his shaky form continued, no doubt not helped by having to come in at 1-1.

He should've been out lbw to Jasprit Bumrah but the India seamer overstepped...

But the England captain couldn't make use of that reprieve and fell shortly after, removed lbw by Ishant Sharma and failing with the review...

Alastair Cook looked OK but he is a concern for me at the top of the order. I still don't think he looks in. When he is in quality form it's the mind that plays so well and it has always been so strong. To see him deflect it to third slip, like fielding practice, I've not seen that from him. I don't think Joe Root wants to play at three, he wants to bat at four. If he continues to play with that head falling to one side it doesn't matter where he is batting he is going to get out.

Think I gave Ian Bell the kiss of death with that last reference to his innings - he's just been dismissed for 204.

The top four are out of confidence, you have to fear for Keaton Jennings' career. He went out there with a pre-determined mind of leaving the ball. That was a fullish ball on leg stump and it was as bad a dismissal as you can see in Test cricket. It's very difficult to get out of that mindset.

Stay tuned for plenty of recaps and reaction as England had to recover from another batting collapse on day one of the fourth Test.

Meanwhile, Ian Bell has just brought up his double hundred for Warwickshire.

Early wickets are the key for England tomorrow morning. The pitch will still be doing a little and it is set up for a great Test match.

  10. Close of play - Ind 19-0published at 18:33 British Summer Time 30 August 2018

Stuart Broad sends it down a fair way outside off and KL Rahul can leave well alone.

England failed to build on the momentum of Sam Curran's stellar knock there.

India's openers reach the close of play without having been really troubled at all.

It could've been much worse for the hosts, of course, who were 86-6 at one point following another dreadful collapse.

This should be the last ball of the day. England haven't used this spell at India well at all...

  12. Ind 19-0published at 3.5 overs

Shikhar Dhawan angles it away through third man for three as Jonny Bairstow gives chase.

  13. Ind 15-0published at 3.3 overs

    Woeful.

Stuart Broad hoops it down very wide and Jos Buttler can't quite grab it, the ball deflecting away off his gloves for four byes.

  14. Ind 11-0published at 3.1 overs

Stuart Broad does find the outside edge but KL Rahul plays it with soft hands, ensuring the ball runs along the floor and wide of the cordon for four.

Mark: This is poor bowling...make them play...I’d give Curran an over.

  17. Ind 7-0published at 3 overs

KL Rahul leaves well as James Anderson swings three outside off stump.

Anderson is trying to set him up for the inswinger but it's not accurate enough.

He then goes straight but Rahul easily defends into the leg side.

The outswinger again and Rahul pushes it through the covers for three. A lovely looking shot.

    Dhawan defends the last.

Mark Elkins: Once again Curran fails to convert a fifty. Wasteful.

  19. Ind 4-0published at 2 overs

Stuart Broad straightens up and KL Rahul slices it away off a thick outside edge for three.

It's a start - England need to make the openers play at more deliveries.

  20. Ind 1-0published at 1.5 overs

    Er, that's what is needed.

Stuart Broad sends down probably one of his worst ever deliveries in Test cricket, the ball firing miles wide and Jos Buttler doing well to get across and catch it.
