Stuart Broad gets it through onto the pads of KL Rahul.

    Huge appeal but not given.

Joe Root considers the review but Keaton Jennings at short leg tells him it was too high.

And Jennings is right - ball tracking shows that was going over.

I think the most important thing I've noticed about this Indian side today, is that Pandya, Sharma and Bumrah sound like characters from ThunderCats.

I don't think I have seen the ball swing so regularly in an English summer. It has hooped.

  5. Ind 0-0published at 1 overs

Dhawan leaves the fifth and gets bat on ball on the last but picks out the fielder at point. That was better and fuller from Anderson, who starts with a maiden.

James Anderson can't get Shikhar Dhawan to play at the first two but the India opener has a bit of a prod at the third.

All outswingers so far and Dhawan leaves the fourth alone.

Anderson now decides to go round the wicket...

I think there are still plenty of runs in this pitch. There was always going to be a bit in it for the bowlers early on but England didn't cope with it very well - again. It could be a case of reverse the batting order. Let's have a bit of Curran and Moeen opening!

England hold a brief huddle at the side of the pitch before running out to take their fielding positions.

Can James Anderson and Stuart Broad strike late on day one?

Here come India openers Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul.

There were 23 byes and there have only been two more in a lower total. In 1951, Godfrey Evans conceded 30 byes out of a total of 189 in Wellington against New Zealand and back in 1906 Percy Sherwell conceded 23 out of a total of 190.

India have done a great job but they will be kicking themselves and you are fighting to get that initiative back, having had the game.

England will have about 15 minutes to bowl at India tonight.

Two or three quick wickets and the hosts will really be back in this.

Sam Curran has given them that chance though. The Surrey man played superbly yet again.

Will Joe Root throw him the ball at some point before the day is out?

What a shame, well played. Sam Curran dug England out of a hole and he is getting a standing ovation. He made it look quite simple where everyone else was struggling and groping outside off-stump.

It could be another match-winner. It was a match-winner at Edgbaston and it is a massive knock for England - it has given them something to bowl at.

Curran b Ashwin 78 (Eng 246 all out)

Ah. Sam Curran goes for the big heave in search of quick runs but misses out and is bowled by Ravichandran Ashwin.

Curran is livid and admonishes himself, smacking the ground with his bat as he walks off.

He's the only person on England's side in the ground who feels that disappointed, though. It's been a superb innings by the 20-year-old all-rounder to drag the hosts back into this game.

He walks off to a standing ovation at the Ageas Bowl.

  16. Eng 246-9published at 76.2 overs

Dearie me, it's another bye and a particularly disappointing one for the tourists as it allows James Anderson to get off strike.

Ravichandran Ashwin now has four balls at Sam Curran.

England will be hoping they can add another 20-30 runs, India will not want more than six. They will be confident of getting Jimmy Anderson out and he is facing.

Stuart Broad stuck around and played his part in a fine partnership with Sam Curran.

But this is why James Anderson is the last man out there in support of the young all-rounder...

  19. Eng 245-9published at 76 overs

Good response by Jasprit Bumrah to prevent Sam Curran scoring.

Curran will be looking for a single off the last...

...but doesn't get it as Bumrah sends down a well-directed bouncer and Curran has to duck under.

  20. Eng 245-9published at 75.2 overs

Sam Curran runs it nicely off the face towards third man, puts his head down and sprints towards the other end.

James Anderson, realising there is no chance of getting two, yells and sends him back.

All smiles. The 36-year-old maybe a much worse batsman but still can teach the 20-year-old a thing or two.
