This is a very good score after being 86-6. It looked then that England would struggle to get another 80 but this has been top class, in a way showing the left-handers are proving a problem for the Indian bowlers.

Martin in Leeds: Sam Curran to open the batting in the fifth Test?

Richard Hodgson: England have found their new opening partnership. Sam Curran and Byes.

Ian Mack: Can we clone Sam Curran so he can occupy positions 1, 2, 3 and 5?

    Curran 78, Anderson 0

That's poor from Mohammed Shami, sending a bouncer miles down leg and letting James Anderson just stand out of the way of it.

One of the biggest cheers of the day greets James Anderson defending the ball back to the bowler.

  5. Eng 245-9published at 74.4 overs

Sam Curran taps a single round the corner and gives James Anderson two balls to fend off.

  6. Eng 244-9published at 74.3 overs

    Whoomph.

Mohammed Shami sends down a slower ball in the slot, Sam Curran waits for it and smashes it back over the bowler's head for four.

  7. Eng 240-9published at 74.2 overs

Haha. Sam Curran gets two short balls from Mohammed Shami and tries to hook both away but misses.

    Not. Hanging. Around.

He was walking straightaway. The moment he missed the ball he knew he was going to be out. He was playing across the line but what a handy innings and the partnership has given England much more than they hoped for when Ben Stokes was out.

Broad lbw Bumrah 17 (Eng 240-9)

    And Stuart Broad can't survive.

The England bowler gets none of his new bat on it, going very deep in his crease and getting pinned dead in front by Jasprit Bumrah.

It's canny bowling by Bumrah, pushing it full and moving back in towards the pads from round the wicket.

Broad barely waits for Bruce Oxenford's finger to rise before he walks off.

The crowd are really into this partnership and into every shot played and every run scored.

More smart batting from Sam Curran, picking up the singles where available.

Stuart Broad has one ball to survive to put the all-rounder back on strike.

He delays proceedings for a moment, calling for a new bat and selecting from the four (four!) taken out for him.

All left-handers look stylish in some way but Sam Curran is combining power with style and that's a heady combination.

  15. Eng 237-8published at 73.2 overs

Shot! Sam Curran pounces on a bit of width from Bumrah and clatters it away to the fence.

Third man was not too far away from that but could barely move before the ball raced over the boundary.

    Curran moves into the 70s...

  16. Eng 233-8published at 73.1 overs

    Remarkable.

Sam Curran goes to launch Jasprit Bumrah down the ground, but it's a slower ball and the England all-rounder has to end up playing the shot one-handed.

He still gets enough on it to chip the bowler and scamper two.

    Curran 65, Broad 16

Mohammed Shami goes round the wicket and gets it onto Stuart Broad's pads.

Big appeal but rightly not given. That was going a fair bit down leg side.

This is Sam Curran's highest score, beating the 63 he made at Edgbaston. Curran is one of four 20-year-old debutants for England this year. They had never had more than one player under the age of 21 make their debut in a calendar year before this one.
