South Africa have suffered a lot of hurt over the last 12 months, such as the World Cup semi-final defeat, but you have to give a lot of credit to Bates and Devine of New Zealand - while England brought their A game today.

  2. SA 129-6published at 20 overs

Shabnim Ismail, the sole left-hander we've seen bat all day, knocks her first ball for a single. (The only other leftie on show, Amy Satterthwaite of New Zealand, wasn't required to bat). Luus takes a single off the final ball.

    Lackay c Sciver b Hazell 4 (SA 127-6)

Danielle Hazell to finish proceedings - and she picks up her second wicket as Lackay is caught on the ring at mid-wicket.

That target of 135 (to avoid the biggest defeat in women's T20 history) is looking a long way off...

Here's how Du Preez was caught by Heather Knight off Sophie Ecclestone...

  5. SA 124-5published at 19 overs

    Brunt 4-0-18-2

A rare single from Sune Luus as Brunt completes her spell.

Just the 127 runs needed from the last over...

Sune Luus is coming in - her innings on this tour have been 0, 2, 0 and 0. She probably won't risk a run-out.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 18.2 overs

    Van Niekerk c Shrubsole b Brunt 72 (SA 123-5)

England's opening bowlers combine to remove Van Niekerk as Brunt bowls and the Proteas skipper is brilliantly caught by Anya Shrubsole diving to her right at mid-off.

And, even better, SA are 123-5 - one, two, three, for five!

  8. SA 123-4published at 18 overs

    Target 251

After a single from Lackay, Van Niekerk bludgeons another four through cover. Amy Jones, who thankfully seems to be OK after being hurt last over, makes a good stop at backward point.

The game's gone, but Van Niekerk's 72 from 49 balls has been impressive.

  9. 6 runs

    SA 115-4published at 17 overs

    Van Niekerk 65 (45 balls)

But Van Niekerk has the last laugh, launching Gunn over wide mid-wicket for back-to-back sixes!

Back in the real world, 115-4 from 17 overs would be a decent T20 score...

  10. ouch!

    SA 103-4published at 16.4 overs

Jenny Gunn bowls one of the slowest deliveries you'll ever see in international cricket... and Van Niekerk just leaves it outside off stump! The smile is quickly off her face as she is hit in the stomach by the next delivery. Ouch indeed.

  11. ouch!

    SA 102-4published at 16.1 overs

Van Niekerk aims to hit Gunn over deep square leg, Amy Jones leaps for the catch and can't hold on, but parries the ball to stop the six. She does, however, land rather awkwardly and looks in a bit of pain.

  12. SA 101-4published at 16 overs

Stacy Lackay, who's made it into the record books herself today after conceding 59 runs in her four overs, can't get her first ball away so the game is pretty much over as a contest.

  13. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 15.5 overs

    Du Preez c Knight b Ecclestone 25 (SA 101-4)

Ecclestone back, Du Preez gives Heather Knight a straightforward catch at extra cover.

And South Africa quite literally have to hit every remaining ball for six to win the game.

  14. 50 runs

50 for Dane van Niekerkpublished at 15 overs

    SA 98-3

Anya Shrbsole, having conceded just two runs in her first three overs, returns to the attack - she limits South Africa to ones and twos, while skipper Van Niekerk reaches her fifty from 38 balls, with seven fours.

Shrubsole takes her cap with figures of 4-2-8-0. Peerless in T20.

  15. SA 88-3published at 14 overs

    Brunt 3-0-17-1

Katherine Brunt back for a burst from the River End, with Sarah Taylor (who wasn't even needed to bat today! Imagine that!) up to the stumps. Van Niekerk takes her hand off her bat as she guides a four through third man.

The required rate? A mere 26.5.

  16. Watch: 'A fantastic effort' - Gunn drops van Niekerk on 32published at 20:02 British Summer Time 20 June 2018

This is worth watching - it's Jenny Gunn's attempt at a Bothamesque catch in front of the Sir Ian Botham Stand.

  17. Postpublished at 20:00 British Summer Time 20 June 2018

    Charlotte Edwards
Ex-England captain on BBC 5 live sports extra

What a day. I'm finding it difficult to watch for South Africa because it's been such a tough day for them. They're going to have to really review this as it could get worse for them.

England have dropped a couple today but their ground fielding and stopping in the deep has been good.

  18. SA 85-3published at 13 overs

    Van Niekerk 41 (29 balls), Du Preez 21 (18)

England have their spinners operating in tandem for the first time as Ecclestone switches to the Somerset Pavilion End - Van Niekerk blasts a first-bounce four to cow corner. The skipper is going well and these two have added 59 ion what is basically a lost cause.

If you don't think we're mentioning the target 9251) much, South Africa have never really been in the hunt... they virtually need to hit every ball for four from here.

  19. dropped catch

Van Niekerk dropped on 32published at 12 overs

    SA 77-3

Oh, this is worth watching again - Van Niekerk launches the ball to long-on, Jenny Gunn nearly pulls off an amazing one-handed catch in front of the Sir Ian Botham Stand (a catch of which the great man himself would be proud)... but she can't quite hang on as her momentum threatens to take her over the boundary, and has a juggling act to stop the ball going over the rope for six or four. The result is... one run.

An eventful over ends with a quick check to the third umpire over a run-out, but the Proteas pair survive for now.

  20. SA 71-3published at 11.1 overs

Van Niekerk reverse-sweeps Hazell, Tammy Beaumont gives chase but her dive can't quite cut off the boundary.
