There have been some notable individual performances at the start of the latest round of County Championship matches, centuries by Matt Renshaw, Rory Burns and Sean Dickson, career-best bowling figures for Zak Chappell and Josh Poysden and a five-for by Duanne Olivier.

In the battle of first versus second in Division One, Renshaw's 106 has helped put Somerset in a decent position against Nottinghamshire, but the leaders are by no means out of it if they can pick up the three wickets they need fairly quickly on day two.

Defending champions Essex enjoyed a good day at Old Trafford, reducing Lancashire to 297-9, despite 79 by Jordan Clark, but they will need to bat well to establish a first-innings lead.

Things are put in a bit of perspective at Chester-le-Street as injury-hit Durham fight back hearteningly against Derbyshire.

Bowled out for 96 by South Africans Hardus Viljeon (5-20) and Duanne Olivier, Durham have retaliated with spirit.

Chris Rushworth, Nathan Rimmington and debutants Matt Salisbury and Josh Coughlin have all taken two wickets each. But Derby's ninth-wicket partners Tony Palladino (26) and Alfie Gleadall (12) had put on 40 by the close.

Leicestershire avoid further damage in the final four overs of play as they end day one in a healthy position against neighbours Northants at Wantage Road, with Colin Ackermann and nightwatchman Gavin Griffiths the not out batsmen.

Pace bowler Zak Chappell's career-best 6-44 fatally undermined the home side's first innings, in which Ricardo Vasconcelos' 49 the highest score, and although no Leicestershire batsman has so far reached 20, they will be hopeful of establishing some sort of first-innings lead.

Lancashire bat out the day - and are just three runs off a third batting bonus point. Who would have bet on that when the hosts were 59-5 two balls after lunch?

Great efforts from Jordan Clark & Shiv Chanderpaul, who shared a sixth-wicket stand of 131.

Then, when spinner Simon Harmer got rid of both inside three balls, Graham Onions and Tom Bailey put on a further 52,

Onions went for a county-best 41, but Bailey is still there, frustratingly for Essex, on 36.

Umpires Billy Taylor and Neil Mallender decide enough is enough after the third rain interruption of the day at the Ageas Bowl.

Despite that, it has been a productive one for Surrey after losing two wickets in the first over of play, including England opener Mark Stoneman caught in the slips for a duck off Hampshire's Fidel Edwards.

Captain Rory Burns will resume on 109 not out, an innings which has included 13 fours so far, with Ben Foakes on 68 - and together, they have added 133 for the fourth wicket.

And Onions has got 41 of them.

It's more than doubled the winter signing from Durham's previous best with the bat for Lancs - and he's already hit six boundaries.

Opener Sean Dickson's 117 helped put Kent in a good position after a hard-fought opening day against Gloucestershire at Bristol.

He hit a six and 13 fours in his 214-ball innings, having put on 124 for the first wicket with Daniel Bell-Drummond (49). Gloucestershire used seven bowlers during the day, with Craig Miles returning the best figures of 2-61.

Old hands Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott see Warwickshire to the close on 24-2 in response to the 220 made by Glamorgan.

It was Bears legspinner Josh Poysden's day, as he took a career-best 5-29. That was slightly soured by the first ball loss of Will Rhodes followed by fellow opener Dom Sibley also going cheaply. But the Bears will be hoping to build a lead tomorrow.

England's Dom Bess hits a boundary in the penultimate over of play to earn Somerset a third batting point. He ends the day on seven not out, with Steven Davies on 59 at the other end.

Star of the day for Somerset was Australia opener Matt Renshaw, who made 106 - his third Championship hundred of the summer - before a reckless shot brought about his downfall.

Nottinghamshire's over-rate is so good that an extra over is possible before the 18:00 BST finish, but spinner Matt Carter is unable to complete a five-for and ends the day with 4-81 from his 27 overs.

Surrey 216-3 (54.2 overs) v Hampshire

Only a short resumption is possible at the Ageas Bowl, with Surrey adding five runs to their total before the rain returns. There are still over 18 overs scheduled, but could that be it for the day? Rory Burns is 109 not out and Ben Foakes has 68.

Just about to go into overtime for the day at Old Trafford, with a further eight overs to be bowled. And the Lancashire tail are now wielding the willow effectively.

Tom Bailey and Graham Onions have both got to 22.

Onions has only faced 15 balls, three of which, by one means or another, have gone to the boundary.

Australia have warmed up for their one-day series against England with an emphatic 101-run win over Middlesex at Lord's. The tourists totalled 283-6, with Travis Head making 106, and then bowled out their county opponents for 182 despite opener Max Holden's 71. Paceman Kane Richardson was the most successful Australian bowler with 3-31 from nine overs.

Not a great day for England's women, who have lost the opening one-day international against South Africa by seven wickets at New Road. Steven Davies picks up three runs off Matt Carter and there's his half-century. It's the 55th of his career and has taken him 107 deliveries. Only eight needed for a third batting point for Somerset.

Better news from the Ageas Bowl with play set to resume at 17:50 BST. There are still 20 overs to be bowled, so it's going to be a late one.

Lancashire's eight-wicket partners Joe Mennie and Tom Bailey have already put on 30 - so it's time for Essex to take the new ball.
