    Glamorgan 154 & 89-7 v Durham 295

That's rather good for a number nine. Ruaidhri Smith cover drives Axar Patel for four to start the scoreboard rolling at Cardiff. Glamorgan are unlikely to escape from this predicament, but a show of defiance to force Durham to bat again would be very welcome among Welsh supporters.

  15. Durham hope for quick finishpublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Glamorgan 154 & 79-7 v Durham 295 - match resumes at 11:00 BST

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Newcastle

It may take just three balls for this one to be over today and if it hadn’t been for rain and bad light last night it would have ended in two days.

Durham need three wickets to wrap up their third win of the season in the County Championship yet Glamorgan have been going through their fielding routines ahead of play today.

In an ideal world, Durham will have this wrapped up before midday and be on the team coach heading home not soon after that. They have a quarter final in the T20 to think about on Friday at home to Sussex.

They also had a lead of 141 at the half-way stage of this one thanks to 95 not out from Indian all-rounder Axar Patel on debut. It is only the second time this season they have been ahead after the first innings.

Hampshire are in a great position to wrap up only their second win in the Championship this year when they resume against Notts this morning, thanks in no small part to the bowling of Fidel Edwards, who took 6-50 against the visitors in their first innings.

Talking to BBC Radio Solent, the former West Indies quick was modest about his efforts and hadn't realised he'd just produced his best ever bowling effort for Hampshire.

"It is? This is the first time I know it"," he said.

"It's a good position having been losing a lot of games in the T20. We need to build confidence from this game, so once we can get over the line here it will be good for us in the future."

  18. Moeen 'revels' in leadership rolepublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Yorkshire 216 v Worcestershire 310-1 - match resumes 11:00 BST

With England's batting in meltdown at Trent Bridge, Moeen Ali provided the selectors with a timely reminder of his talent as Worcestershire batted themselves into a strong position on day two against Yorkshire.

Acting skipper Moeen made 107 not out - his first Championship ton since the start of the 2016 season - as he and Daryl Mitchell (144 not out) shared an unbroken stand of 199.

"He revels in being the captain, he loves that responsibility," Mitchell told BBC Hereford & Worcester.

"We've seen it in the T20, he's played some fantastic innings and bowled brilliantly, and today again he's really stood up and played a captain's innings."

    Somerset 324 & 32-1 v Essex 191 - match resumes 11:00 BST

Essex captain Ryan ten DoeschateImage source, Rex Features

Essex skipper Ryan ten Doeschate insists his side are still in with a chance of derailing Somerset's Championship challenge despite being second best for much of the first two days at Taunton.

The second-placed home side will resume on 32-1, already 165 runs to the good, but ten Doeschate has faith in his talented bowling attack.

"We've got a lot of work to do but the team has shown in the past how good it is at fighting. There is still a lot of belief there," he told BBC Essex.

"Whatever score we end up chasing, it's going to be tough against two quality spinners [Jack Leach and Dom Bess]. We'll try to chase as little as possible, under 300 would be useful."

    Ruaidhri SmithImage source, Huw

Glamorgan may be facing the prospect of a heavy defeat in their Division Two game against Durham at Cardiff, but at least seam bowler Ruaidhri Smith can look back on the match with a measure of pride.

The Scot took 5-87 in Durham's first - and what will probably be only - innings, the first Championship 'five-for' of his career, having provided some tail-end resistance with 36 off 36 balls on day one.

"It wasn't a great day for the team and it would have been nicer to get my first five-for in a stronger position. I think I've bowled better in the past but it was my day today with the ball," he told BBC Wales Sport.

"The more games I've played, the more comfortable I feel bowling and it's just gone on from there, getting more overs under my belt in a season uninterrupted by injuries, which has been a big thing for me."
