Jack Leach will be looking for a good start after a difficult summer for him with injury and then missing out on selection for the India Tests with Adil Rashid preferred even though he wasn’t playing red ball cricket at the time.

He’ll be trying to impress national selector Ed Smith and establish himself in the side.

In his debut Test in Christchurch Leach didn’t make the most of helpful conditions and he’ll again be expected to perform here.

An early wicket would settle the nerves.

  2. SL 33-2published at 11 overs

Plenty of smiles on England faces out there at the moment as Joe Root leads the on-field chat. A spring in the collective step after this fine start.

Sri Lanka trail by 310 runs. Sam Curran drops short and he's not quick enough to get away with that on this pitch, but Dhananjaya de Silva misses out, pulling straight to the man in the deep.

Sam Curran back into the attack, replacing Jimmy Anderson then. A change of ends for the left armer.

  4. SL 32-2published at 10 overs

Jack Leach twirling in, nice dip into the right-hander. He's got a bit of variation to his game. Maiden.

Jimmy Anderson has 565 Test wickets to his name now. Ahead of him are only Anil Kumble (619), Shane Warne (708) and the great Murali (800).

    EIGHT HUNDRED!

  6. SL 32-2published at 9 overs

Spin from one end but Jimmy Anderson stays on at the other, five slips line up looking for the edge. Joe Root keeping his foot on the gas.

England's first innings of 342 felt a bit light but those early wickets could show things in a different light. Anderson continues to move the ball both ways as the England fans get the lagers in in Galle.

    Decent start from Jack Leach.

  8. SL 31-2published at 7.3 overs

Jack Leach's first ball is a beauty! Drift into the batsman and a touch of turn, enough to beat the outside edge and excite the close-in fielders. Very nice indeed.

Kusal Mendis is able to poke a single away though and get out of the firing line.

It is Jack Leach who will have a bowl, just his second Test match...

  10. SL 30-2published at 7 overs

A rare scare-less over for Sri Lanka. Solid. Spin time?

  11. SL 30-2published at 6.2 overs

We think it could be spin next up. Jack Leach is going through some elaborate warming up as Dhananjaya de Silva spoons Jimmy Anderson away for two.

Sam Curran appeals successfully for lbw against Kaushal SilvaImage source, Getty Images

Another tidy start from Sam Curran. What he lacks in pace and menace he makes up for in line and length. I assume we'll see spin soon but the two seamers have made a grand start.

As soon as I type that Curran overpitches and Kusal Mendis drives him for four. And again! Eight of the best.

I think that chance went between Rory Burns and Joe Root. Hard to see.

  14. SL 19-2published at 5 overs

    De Silva 6, Mendis 8

Jimmy Anderson beats the outside edge of Dhananjaya de Silva, a beauty. There's nearly a runout chance in the over too but De Silva is safely home. Sri Lanka in a bit of a pickle, and there's another chance!

Edged, genuine edge, and it goes between the slips. Anderson fuming already.

  15. SL 14-2published at 4 overs

Kusal Mendis is the new batsman and he's lucky, he tries to leave the last ball of the over but gets a thick edge, toe really, on the ball and it flies wide of the cordon and goes for four.

More praise for Foakes, this time from Surrey's coach...

Silva lbw Curran 1 (SL 10-2)

Test cricket is easy, isn't it? England having a fine start to the day, Sam Curran swinging one into the pads of Kaushal Silva, who looks dead in front of the timbers.

He thinks about the review, but in the end accepts his fate and trudges off to the pavillion.

    What a start!

If you're just joining us Ben Foakes completed his hundred on his Test debut, and then took a catch with the second ball of the day.

    He's had worse Wednesdays.

  19. SL 10-1published at 3 overs

Jimmy Anderson getting the ball to swing a touch in the Galle haze. It's what he does. He's up to 565 Test wickets now, a phenomenal haul.

Sri Lanka are able to nudge him away for a couple of singles before Dhananjaya de Silva almost plays on! Did him for bounce, he inside edges down into the pitch, and it bounces just wide of the stumps...

  20. SL 8-1published at 2 overs

What a morning trip that has been!

Nice shape from Sam Curran to Dhananjaya de Silva, who has come out to bat at three. He was down at seven on the teamsheet but that could be our error. Captain Dinesh Chandimal is not fit, remember, so we doubt he'll come out at four as scheduled.

Tidy opening over from Curran. Just a single from it.
