Ben Foakes told us yesterday that it was a “shock” he was selected for this game and his family hadn’t made the trip to Sri Lanka as they didn’t expect him to play.

But I gather after a late dash yesterday some members of his family are at the ground and witnessed both his first Test century and first catch in Tests.

It is Sam Curran to open the bowling, not Jack Leach.

England women's wicketkeeper-batter Sarah Taylor is enjoying Ben Foakes' work!

    As are all of us.

  4. SL 7-1published at 1 over

That's Jimmy Anderson's 43rd Test wicket of 2018. He collects them like nobody else. He almost squeezes an inside edge onto to the stumps too before the end of the first over of the day.

No Alastair Cook in the slips of course. Root, Stokes, Burns and Buttler line up.

    Karunaratne c Foakes b Anderson 4 (Sri Lanka 4-1)

Sri Lanka love a review! And you can't keep Ben Foakes out of the game. Century on debut, dismissal second ball in. A clear nick on the review audio, a thin edge but a clear one.

    What a start for England.

Has Jimmy Anderson struck yet again?! Caught behind, Sri Lanka want a review...

  7. SL 4-0published at 0.1 overs

Four first ball as Jimmy Anderson slides one across the face of Dimuth Karunaratne and he guides a thickish outside edge to the fence.

Here come the Sri Lankan openers. Will captain Dinesh Chandimal be fit enough to bat? He went off the field a few times with a groin injury on the opening day and wasn't fielding for the hosts this morning.

He's due to bat at four. Can't have a runner these days. Kaushal Silva and Dimuth Kaarunaratne are the opening pair, out in the middle now.

    All set?

Let's not lose sight of the fact that this excellent debut century brings us a step closer to the limerick-writer's dream middle-order line-up of Stokes, Foakes and Woakes.....

Will Jack Leach open the bowling with Jimmy Anderson then, or Sam Curran?

It will have been a long while since Anderson opened with anyone other that Stuart Broad.

Kashif Ahmed: Well done to Ben Foakes on his maiden century! To do it when it matters AND in your first test. Brilliant.

George Khandakar: No doubt that if at least two top-order English batsman are able to score big in Test matches then they will be the best batting side in Test cricket as their lower order is strong enough than their top order.

Tom: Can’t believe Foakes has left Jimmy stranded like that! Selfish!

  13. Foakes 'hugely impressive'published at 05:05 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2018

    Jonathan Agnew
    BBC cricket correspondent in Galle

An intelligent and well paced Test innings from Ben Foakes. He looks more capable than a number seven.

He followed the essential principles - playing straight with good foot movements.

Scoring at a run every two balls is about right for playing in these conditions. He looked calm and assured and it was a hugely impressive debut innings.

    All over!

He goes big again but it's a huge, steepling top edge. England are all out, they lasted half an hour this morning and Ben Foakes got to that fine maiden century.

Job pretty well done? The Sri Lanka players run to congratulate Foakes as he sprints off to get ready for a day behind the stumps.
