The players make their way out onto the Galle outfield then. Ben Foakes and Jack Leach with bats under arms.

On the TV Bumble suggests that Leach will open the bowling for England when it's their turn. Quite a sight.

Cloudy but bright in Galle with a few patches of blue sky and even some sunshine breaking through.

The forecast suggests we may get some thundery showers after lunch, but then that is what they say around here virtually every day.

All five days of the Test are officially sold out, but a good number of England supporters are already gathering up on the ramparts of the old dutch fort to get a view of the action for free.

As I discovered yesterday it isn’t just England and Sri Lanka supporters in town. The attraction of the iconic ground here in Galle has encouraged cricket fans from India, New Zealand and Australia to watch this Test. Mind you if I was an Australian cricket fan I might try and watch a different side at the moment!

Sri Lanka Cricket says the second Test against England will go ahead in Kandy following accommodation concerns.

The location of the match was in doubt after a double booking meant there was no rooms for Sri Lanka and England players at a nearby hotel.

The Earls Regency, a 16-minute drive from the Pallekele cricket ground, had been fully booked by fan tour groups.

Sri Lanka's government intervened, saying it was a "crisis of national interest".

How does Ben Foakes go about chasing down this hundred then? He was very watchful yesterday, but he'll be mindful that there are only two wickets left and Jack Leach and Jimmy Anderson aren't perhaps the most reliable partners...

Matt Prior is the only wicketkeeper to score a century on debut for England - a feat he managed back in 2007 against West Indies.

It was the first time since 1938 that four Englishmen had reached three figures in one innings of a Test. Those were the days!

Debutant Ben Foakes says he was "inspired" by a video message from former captain Alastair Cook as his unbeaten 87 helped England recover from another batting collapse on day one.

Poor shot selection saw the tourists slip to 103-5 before lunch in Galle.

But wicketkeeper Foakes' 184-ball knock took England to 321-8 at the close.

"I don't know who asked him to do it, but it was awesome," Foakes, 25, said of the Cook video.

"We all sat down and watched it, it was inspiring and got us pumped up."

    Jonathan Agnew
    BBC cricket correspondent in Galle

In doing my job I have watched a lot of players make their debuts in Test cricket and personally I was someone who was consumed by nerves in my first Test.

In his innings of 87 not out on day one against Sri Lanka, Ben Foakes showed he could be one of those who easily make the transition from county cricket.

To have come in at 103-5 in his first Test, with England having played so appallingly, could have been a cue for panic but the Surrey man displayed a great deal of calm and showed those before him how to do it.

He moved his feet well. There were no silly chances. He did not try to dominate the bowling like those before him did. He just played as you should on the first day of a Test match and that was all there was to it.

  16. Unlucky for some...published at 03:55 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2018

In Australian cricket, 87 is a superstitiously unlucky score and is referred to as "the devil's number."

This originates from the fact that 87 is 13 runs short of a century.

Ben Foakes, on England debut, was 87 not out overnight. Can he go on and convert?
