  1. Eng 23-0published at 8 overs

    Eng lead by 162 runs

Rangana Herath is on! The final innings of his storied Test career. Another chapter still to write?

Rory Burns is sharp to get to the pitch of the ball and play him away through the onside. Keaton Jennings paddles a sweep away. Careful now.

  2. Eng 21-0published at 7 overs

    Burns 4, Jennings 16

I can't see it - One swallow does not make a summer and all that. Thoughts?

Keaton Jennings has started this second innings very well. A chance to make a statement? He may need one.

With Anderson (arguably) coming to the end of his amazing career and England now appearing to have a quality spin attack, is it time for us to move away from producing 'green tops' for home test series and try to develop a more rounded approach to test cricket which would work well overseas.

  4. Eng 20-0published at 6 overs

    Eng lead by 159

As you'd expect, the body language is not too great from the hosts in these closing stages. It's been a long, largely disappointing day for Sri Lanka.

Six overs left after this one.

  5. The streaker!published at 11:17 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2018

Here he is. I've had to crop this quite tightly as you can appreciate but he's athletic, leaping over the roller much to the annoyance of the watching groundstaff.

  6. Eng 17-0published at 5 overs

    Burns 2, Jennings 14

Rory Burns is happy to get off strike and let Keaton Jennings have the ball. Jennings looking solid and compact in these opening stages. Really watching the ball on to his bat.

I think England have done really well. We were a bit sceptical early on about them being a bit defensive but Joe Root would say they kept Sri Lanka in check. All they need to do now is bat good first-class cricket and pile on the misery tomorrow.

  8. Eng 14-0published at 4 overs

    Eng lead by 153

Keaton Jennings batted pretty well in the first innings but still missed out on a first fifty for two years. Can he get one here? He's raced to 12, lovely cut for four.

Both of these men just need to see the day out from here. England are effectively 153-0.

Rangana Herath's penultimate Test innings ended on 14 not out. The 40-year-old was given a guard of honour by England.

Bit more pace from Dilruwan Perera, Rory Burns almost runs past it. The top order got themselves out to some horrid shots in the first innings. Time to dig in and learn, make Sri Lanka pay.

  11. Streaker on the movepublished at 11:06 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2018

    Adam Mountford
    Radio 5 live in Galle

The streaker from a few minutes ago suddenly appeared from the mid-wicket boundary edge here in Galle.

He leaped over the heavy roller, evaded the fourth umpire guarding the pitch during the tea interval and disappeared into a throng of fans on the other side of the ground.

It looked as if he had a set of clothes prepared for him to change into. No idea if he managed to escape police censure, but as John Arlott famously said once on TMS “he may have seen the last of his cricket for the day”.

I hope Keaton Jennings succeeds because he looks like he has the right kind of character. I like the way he carries himself.

  13. Eng 7-0published at 2 overs

    Burns 1, Jennings 5

Don't rule it out, Michael. I've seen England lose from better positions than this. Collingwood 206, 551-6 DECLARED in the first innings!

Keaton Jennings slashes at a wide one from Suranga Lakmal and that's four all day long. Lakmal gets a word from the umpire for walking on the middle of the pitch. Vigilant.

The day has all been England. The only way Sri Lanka can take anything from the day is to take two or three wickets tonight and then you never know, but a lead of this number is such a big one. The pitch will only get worse to bat on.

England will have to go some way to allow Sri Lanka to get back into the Test match.

  15. Eng 2-0published at 1 over

    Eng lead by 141

Rory Burns is off the mark before the England fans have completed their Jerusalem runthrough. Add a leg bye for good measure.

  16. Eng 0-0published at 0.3 overs

Dilruwan Perera opens the bowling with his spin. Rory Burns calmly deals with the first three balls of the day.

A reader mentioned earlier that Ben Foakes had a look of Dave Grohl about him. Keaton Jennings has a slight hint of a young Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age. Some sort of batting super group being formed out there.

Nice to see a few Sri Lankans asking Rory Burns if he's OK after that earlier whack to the head. I presume that is the chat anyway. Inquest followed immediately by sledge?

When England were 113-5 before lunch on the first day, who thought that they would hold a 139-run lead at this stage?

    Not me.

The Sri Lankans are already out on the field awaiting Keaton Jennings and Rory Burns.

Galle has to be the best ground in the world to streak, if you are ever considering it. There won't be much stewarding, the weather is great, you can go straight into the sea...

  20. 'A very natural keeper'published at 10:53 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2018

    Niall O'Brien
Ex-Ireland wicketkeeper on The Cricket Social

Ben Foakes has had a great day. Jonny (Bairstow) and Jos (Buttler) are batsmen-wicketkeepers who had to work extremely hard to improve their keeping and have done that very well.

Foakes has come in and is a more ready-made keeper than the other two at the start of their careers. He looks a very natural keeper. It looks like it has been his first trait.
