Has Ben Stokes got a clause in his contract obliging Root to give him a bowl? Three spinners getting plenty of turn plus Anderson and Curran to come back. What is the point?

Too many cooks? Or could England still do with one more at the top?

Jack Leach has the ball now as Joe Root's ever-changing conveyor belt of bowlers coughs out another option. First ball he coaxes a quarter-chance, dropped short of short leg.

These two going along at a fair pace.

If you get in and play patiently you shouldn't have too many worries on this pitch.

Sometimes when you have so many options it becomes harder for a captain because you feel everyone has to have a bowl.

That was some catch from Keaton Jennings. Another string to his bow which is no bad thing for the opener at the moment.

Nice flight again from Moeen to coerce Dilruwan Perera into an expansive drive, but he manages to keep it down and safe.

That's streaky! Dilruwan down the track and goes aerial, a bit of a swipe across the line and while it goes for four that could really have gone anywhere.

Perera is here for a good time, not a long time, I fear.

There are 26 overs left in the day, England will be hoping, demanding to have bowled the hosts out by then.

Niroshan Dickwella fishes for one outside his off stump and Ben Stokes nearly has a wicket - the ball drops short of first slip.

He then livens up his pace to dive past the outside edge of the right-hander too. Good bowling. Dilruwan Perera gets a single to go past 1,000 runs in Tests.

Shot! Dickwella with the scoop/ramp over the keeper's head. Four. Perfectly deliberate. Class.

I'm a big fan of this 'fielding on your knees' role which Joe Root has taken on today. Apparently Marcus Trescothick was the first man to come up with it. A pioneer for lazy people everywhere.

Moeen Ali rattles through an over in no time at all.

The Galle DJ has shifted playlists to '90s rave', not sure it's quite in tune with the demographic of most travelling England fans. More Countryfile than Cream I think.

Ben Stokes shapes the ball nicely past the outside edge. Over on Sky, former Aussie bowler Brad Hogg is being told off for not having been up to look around the fort which overlooks the ground yet. Quite right too. Lazy.

Although it reminds me of a long-standing argument between a group of friends of mine over whether Bill Gates was within his rights to go on safari and never once leave his luxury accommodation. Animals were right there. Unforgivable in my book.

Together, we may be able to bring an end to all work meetings this morning. We shall prove that they achieve nothing.

Moeen is bowling very nicely now, flighting the ball in, mixing up his pace. Tempting Dilruwan Perera who very much wants to put bat on ball.

Some chin music coming up from Ben Stokes I reckon - up around Dilruwan's eyeballs. There's not much in the pitch for him but he'll extract what he can.

This is a huge session for the hosts to try and dig in. Fans too, as a man in a Palace shirt and a can of lager wears the look of early-onset sunburn...

    Something stodgy maybe.

New batsman Dilruwan Perera comes right down the track and smashes Moeen Ali over his head, doesn't get hold of it though and it's almost a chance. England won't mind that.

Ben Stokes has the ball from the other end.

That is just a lapse in concentration from Mathews.

Moeen is bowling a better line than the Sri Lanka off-spinners. He is bowling a yard outside off stump and that brings in both edges.

I don't know what Mathews had for his tea but that was a bit of a lapse.

  14. SL 136-6published at 49.3 overs

That's what you call a big wicket. A game changer?

Sri Lanka are 206 runs behind with just four wickets left. Follow-on?

    Wicket first ball!

First ball after tea, with Keaton Jennings donning the helmet in at short leg after that injury to Rory Burns, and he makes a very smart catch!

Looped up off bat/pad/glove and Jennings snaffles it to his left. Very smart catch indeed from the England opener.

Angelo Mathews and Niroshan Dickwella are the batsmen, they have four balls of a Moeen Ali over to complete.

  20. Where are we?published at 09:28 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2018

A quick recap for those of you just getting up, tuning in or on the way to Tom's meeting.

Ben Foakes completed his debut 100 early this morning before England were bowled out for 342.

They then ripped through Sri Lanka's top order to reduce the hosts to 40-4. We were thinking about a three-day finish at that stage but Sri Lanka have recovered.

Adil Rashid and Foakes combined for a beauty of a stumping but Sri Lanka will resume after tea on a marginally more healthy 136-5.

    Still 206 behind.
