Excellent forward defence from Rangana Herath to Moeen Ali. He made his Test debut in 1999. Generation game. He sweeps nicely away to get off strike.

Suranga Lakmal then leaves the footwork at home and clubs a monster of an off drive to the fence. Brilliant shot.

This reminds me of when Glenn McGrath walked out to bat in his last match. The smoke from the fireworks is drifting off past the sightscreen.

You have to question some of the shots that are being played here. They are playing attacking shots and are perishing.

More fireworks welcome Rangana Herath to the crease on his final Test appearance, with the England field forming an obliging guard of honour just on the edge of the square. The 40-year-old is saying goodbye after a fine career.

    Perera c Buttler b Leach 21 (SL 175-9)

Catch that! Dilruwan Perera wants to get on with it, doesn't get all of it and again it's Jos Buttler perfectly placed to snaffle the catch.

Not straightforward, that was belted hard and high. Good catch.

Quite the return to form with the ball from Moeen. He's been excellent in this session in particular.

Jack Leach continues from the other end, England scenting a chance to wrap this innings up double-quick.

Moeen only has one Test five-fer overseas. Since that haul in Bangladesh in 2016 he has taken 15 wickets in 11 matches overseas at an average of 85.

Suranga Lakmal got a tickle of an inside edge, he's safe. Good decision from umpire Marais Erasmus.

    Over!

Suranga Lakmal is the new batsman, Moeen hits him on the pads, Joe Root sends it upstairs.

    Why not?

It was a good ball first of all with a bit of drift, turn and bounce. Foakes went with the ball and it hit the left glove and he pouched it with his right. It was superb technique. The dream debut continues.

  11. wicket

    Dananjaya c Foakes b Moeen 0 (SL 173-8)

This is a lovely spell from Moeen Ali, every ball is asking a question and these tailenders just don't have the answers.

A ball after ripping past the outside edge of Akila Dananjaya's bat, Moeen finds it and man of the moment Ben Foakes takes a very, very sharp catch behind the stumps.

    Reactions=20.

Joe Root moves his close fielders about for the new batsman Akila Dananjaya. Matt Henry tells me he's useful with the bat for a number nine.

Root on his knees at a very short gully. Moeen rips a beauty past the edge.

  13. SL 173-7published at 61 overs

    Dananjaya 0, Perera 20

Moeen now leading the way with three wickets for England. He did get a golden duck though. Call it a draw.

Jack Leach coerces a false shot from Dilruwan Perera and it is past Ben Stokes at slip before he can react.

    Dickwella c Buttler b Moeen 28 (SL 171-7)

Right plan, different batsman. Moeen gives one plenty of flight and width and Niroshan Dickwella can't resist a go at it. In his head he saw it clearing the ropes and a heroic welcome from the folk of Galle, instead he doesn't middle it and picks out the diving Jos Buttler at short extra cover.

If you have multiple wicketkeepers on the pitch you'll see some good catches. And that was one!

  16. SL 169-6published at 59.3 overs

Perera continuing the attack when he can, he hits Moeen over the top and doesn't get all of it but enough to drop safe. Flight it up there Moeen and get catching!

  17. SL 168-6published at 59 overs

    Dickwella 26, Perera 17

Jack Leach looking for turn, he gets one in to Niroshan Dickwella, who plays an awkward sort of reverse sweep that almost offers a catching chance but it's about ankle height. No chance for slip.

Dickwella then dances down the pitch to clip a lovely shot through the air, over midwicket for four. Fine strike.

  18. SL 164-6published at 58 overs

Shouts from the close fielders as Moeen nearly teases the ball between bat and pad. He is producing lovely turn and bounce.

  19. SL 164-6published at 57.1 overs

Sound logic from Michael Vaughan. That means England ideally need to take four wickets for 80 runs from here.

    Moeen back on the ball.

  20. 'I want a 100-run lead'published at 10:00 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2018

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on The Cricket Social

What England can't afford to do is let Sri Lanka get close because then the third innings becomes horrible.

I would want a 100-run lead from here. These next four wickets could win the game.
