Keeping wicket, you don't need to exaggerate anything. Get in a good position and do the job you are there to do. You don't need to be fancy.

Ben Foakes moves well, he's good to the spinners and to pace. Foakes will be a fine keeper for England even if there is a conundrum with three potential keepers in the side. Who will take most chances? Productivity is the key.

Moeen's hair still looks a straggly mess. He's really full to start this over, probably too full. The plan definitely looks to be to get Dickwella to drive.

Dickwella is rightly watchful with that shot and instead chooses to sweep. He connects excellently and crunches the ball to the boundary.

Dickwella is a left-hander of course and that might be why Joe Root is now replacing Adil Rashid with Moeen Ali.

Root settles with a slip, a fifth slip/gully, and a man close-in on the drive but Dickwella dabs one to get off strike. We saw in the ODIs that Dickwella likes a big swing. He opened the batting in that format but is at number seven here.

At the other end Angelo Mathews continues to look solid. A lot will rest on his shoulders now.

England now have new batsman Dickwella on strike with Anderson bowling at him.

Joe Root waves his arms to get this field perfect.

Ben Foakes is the first England wicketkeeper to take a stumping in the first innings of his Test debut since Bob Taylor in 1971.

"Woaaaaah, we're halfway there," sing the England fans.

Joe Root's men are indeed now halfway through the Sri Lanka line-up.

Root has used five bowlers today. All five have now taken a wicket.

Left-hander Niroshan Dickwella comes in now at number seven.

Ben Foakes had a good look at it, but he stayed nice and calm. It bounced a bit, he is a brilliant keeper and made that look easy.

You can get giddy when a batsman comes down the wicket. I am thrilled to bits for Foakes.

Chandimal st Foakes b Rashid (SL 115-5)

Breakthrough! Dinesh Chandimal has been completely done by Adil Rashid while Ben Foakes' day keeps getting better. It's a very well deserved wicket for Rashid. He's got better and better as this spell has gone on.

This one is the perfect leg-spinner. It is flighted and makes Chandimal come down the pitch but a bit of dip and sharp spin takes the ball past the edge and leaves the batsman stranded.

Foakes then takes off the bails to complete the stumping. A brilliant wicket.

It does now look like Jimmy Anderson got an official warning a couple of overs ago for running on the middle of the pitch. We've just seen another replay where the umpire had a word after Anderson's boot landed right in the danger area and then made a signal to the other ump at square-leg.

Anderson can have one more warning. If he was then to be punished for a third time he would have to be taken out of the bowling attack for the rest of the innings.

The Burnley Express is trying to bowl cutters and tempt the batsmen into a loose drive. Chandimal fishes at one which just misses the outside edge. Another good over.

Alex Chapman: How are we even entertaining the thought of dropping Bairstow, Buttler or Foakes? Surely it's worth the risk of pushing Bairstow up the order since he would be replacing the most unproductive batsman in the team - Jennings

Anderson looks really grumpy. He's stomping back to his mark and this might have something to do with that potential warning in the last over.

We've just seen a replay of that exchange.

As Anderson went take collect his sunglasses and cap at the end of the over, umpire Chris Gaffaney pulled them away like a parent telling off their child for being naughty.

He then had a little word and gave Anderson his belongings back.

    One from his latest over.

I've just been on a forlorn search around the ground trying to track down the brother of Ben Foakes, who apparently arrived in Sri Lanka just in time to see his sibling reach his maiden Test 100.

You get some weird looks from strangers who have a passing resemblance to the Surrey wicketkeeper when you randomly ask them if they are related to England’s new star player.

    The search goes on.

But what I can report is that it is seriously hot out there today, by far the warmest since we arrived in Galle. I can also report that the lunchtime grub available at the ground is more burgers and bangers than traditional Sri Lanka curries reflecting the complete dominance of English support here.

Adil Rashid looks as threatening as anyone right now. Another appeal comes from behind the stumps for lbw but Ben Foakes is being a little ambitious there.

Chandimal skips down the pitch to block back Rashid and then has to hobble back to avoid being run out.

I wonder if he'll be after a massage at tea.

  19. SL 109-4published at 39 overs

Anderson has a first slip and a fourth slip but there's no swing with this old-ish ball. The umpires are getting a little twitchy about Anderson running on the pitch in his follow-through. Jimmy looks a little grumpy as he takes his cap at the end of the over.

I'm not sure if Anderson got a formal warning there but he might not be far off if he didn't.

England are concerned about letting Sri Lanka too close to their score, they think this pitch is really going to go. Looking at the defensive fields, England look wary about what could happen later on on this pitch.

    The weather is beautiful.
