Now we do have a change of bowling. Adil Rashid is coming on for his first bowl.

    The field is still spread...

England's approach has been very similar to Sri Lanka's tactics after lunch yesterday. England have these two batsmen to get rid of and after that there is not much there for Sri Lanka. I'd like England to lure them out of their bunker and play some shots.

My concern with this field and plan from England is they could just let the game drift for an hour and by that time Sri Lanka have added another 50 runs and Angelo Mathews is in.

England haven't really created anything since lunch. There was one appeal for lbw off Leach but there was a big inside edge. There's a bit of excitement in this over for a close catch but there was no bat this time and the ball fell out of reach of short leg Rory Burns.

England's field is very defensive with Sri Lanka picking up singles easily. I like to see a batsman having to work hard to get men pushed back. What I would say is Jack Leach bowls a very full length which might be why England have a long-on.

  6. SL 69-4published at 30 overs

    Mathews 20, Chandimal 11

Jack Leach has definitely been more accurate than Moeen Ali so far. We still haven't seen Adil Rashid yet.

This day is following a similar theme to yesterday. A load of wickets in the morning and then a quiet spell in the afternoon when the batsmen slowly accumulate.

I'd be bringing these fielders up and stopping all of the singles if I was Joe Root.

Dinesh Chandimal opens up to sweep Moeen away, in a similar fashion to the crazy wicket Moeen picked up earlier. The Sri Lanka skipper nails this one though.

Angelo Mathews is then nimble on his toes to work Moeen away, no run.

This England team is full of all-rounders, not many specialists around at all.

But what if every player had to have at least two strings to their bow? What would your all-rounders XI be?

Michael Vaughan has suggested this on The Cricket Social and said it would mean James Anderson would be immediately dropped.

Burns, Jennings and Leach and Anderson are also out I'm afraid. Woakes opening up the batting?

    Let us know...

Angelo Mathews has thrown away his helmet and is now batting in a cap. Is there a better sight in cricket?

England still aren't really attacking here. It's pretty comfortable for Chandimal to collect two more through the covers.

Another push to long on gives him one on the final ball. I don't get this from England.

  12. SL 61-4published at 27 overs

    Mathews 17, Chandimal 6

The sun is properly out now at Galle. Will we see the pitch start to break up and spin even further? Moeen drops a little too short and Angelo Mathews cuts behind square. Mathews and his captain Chandimal make it through for two but the latter did not look too comfortable with his groin there. It's wasn't the quickest of runs.

No need to run this time. A reverse sweep from Mathews is excellently timed. Not the tradtionalist's choice at 57-4 but it worked.

I have an ominous stat: England have not won the Test match immediately following a US midterm election since 1986...

  14. SL 55-4published at 26 overs

Jack Leach continues for England, on the money pretty much every ball. He's been accurate, and that's a beauty to tease the outside edge of Angelo Mathews' bat.

Mathews decides he needs some advanced footwork to get at Leach, which can only be a good sign. He is able to punch away for a single, mind.

  15. SL 54-4published at 25 overs

    Mathews 10, Chandimal 6

There's the first sign of aggression from the Sri Lanka batsmen after lunch. Dinesh Chandimal gets down on one knee and sweeps Moeen Ali behind square for four.

Graeme Horner: There's something Dave Grohl about Ben Foakes, partly his looks but also I reckon DG would calmly compose a disciplined sub-continent century whilst the rest of the band plays some loose stuff.

Grohl would not be your man to anchor an innings, I have to disagree. You want a bassist for that role.

  17. SL 49-4published at 24 overs

    Big appeal. England like this.

Leach hits Chandimal's pad and they plead for the lbw. The umpire shakes his head and Joe Root swoops in from the covers to ask his bowler about a review. "Bat first?" Root says. His instinct was right. There was an inside edge. Good decision not to review.

The ball actually almost went through for a catch to Foakes off the inside edge and pad but dropped just out of his reach. Would have been some catch.

First ball of Leach's new over...

A push to long off for one.

    Bring them up, Joe.

  19. SL 48-4published at 23 overs

"Love that, Mo," barks Ben Foakes from behind the stumps after a good delivery from Moeen Ali to Angelo Mathews. Foakes sounds full of confidence in his role of wicketkeeper after his century earlier. Mathews is a fine one-day player but looks to be digging in here. He blocks, blocks and blocks again before taking another single to that long-on fielder on the final ball of the over.
