Joe Root changes away from spin for the first time in this session.

    Jimmy Anderson is returning.

I like this change up. Chandimal and Mathews have played the spinners pretty well since lunch.

Do you think the responsibility for these fields lie with the bowlers or the captain? My sense is that these spinners aren't the most assertive in character and so it is down to Joe Root.

I want Joe Root to come in and tell them what he wants.

Adil Rashid continues after lunch and rips an absolute beauty past Dinesh Chandimal's edge. Is Rashid starting to find his rhythm? It looks like it.

Maybe not. Rashid drops way too short and Chandimal clubs him away for four later in the over.

He gets back on track on the final ball with another good 'un. Maybe the half-tracker was just a blip.

David: Bewildering tactics?? Got up to see the post lunch session at 42-4 expecting to see men around the bat but looks like the death overs of a T20, come on Joe.

Josh Cooper: Any chance at all that letting them have as many singles to long off as they want is just part of some sort of cunning plan?

England have now brought in a leg slip for Moeen Ali. That brings the feeling that there's a little more threat from the bowler.

Chandimal doesn't seem to be able to get his full power into strokes because of this injury. He gets to the pitch of a delivery from Moeen but only gets two.

That brings up the Sri Lankan hundred on the stroke of drinks. They have added 60 runs without the loss of a wicket since lunch.

Rashid was known for many years at Yorkshire as the hoover, because he would come on with five or six down and he would mop up three or four wickets in no time at all.

He probably thought his Test match days are gone and he got the shock of his life when he got the call. He has talent, he can potentially change a game. You are allowed the odd luxury in your team and he certainly is that. He can be a leg-spinner who can win you a game.

  7. SL 95-4published at 36 overs

It may not have resulted in a wicket but it was a good spinning delivery from Adil Rashid. It was probably the best he has bowled so far. It pitched outside leg stump and turned sharply to take the outside edge.

On the last ball of the over Rashid bowls his googly that spins back into the batsman and finds the inside edge this time. The close fielders scramble around to try and take the catch but it falls safe.

    A better over from Rashid.

There's enough proof there to suggest that the ball hit the ground. It's the right decision.

You can never say for sure from those camera shots. Ben Stokes' reaction, he doesn't look too miffed.

  9. Not outpublished at 35.1 overs

    Probably the right decision.

The third umpire decides that the ball has bounced just before Stokes' hands. He gives it not out.

  10. Postpublished at 08:06 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2018

Has it hit bounced off Stokes' finger tips or the grass? The umpire is still checking...

  11. Postpublished at 08:05 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2018

Hmmmm. I'm not sure about this. It might have bounced just before Stokes took the catch.

  12. Umpire reviewpublished at 08:05 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2018

But is this the breakthrough!? Dinesh Chandimal edges Adil Rashid to Ben Stokes at slip. Stokes celebrates straight away. England think this is out. But the umpires want to check. The soft signal is out.

    OK. I'll stop that now.

Moeen Ali's lengthening hair on the top of his head is starting to look a little messy. It's warm out there. Could England throw the ball to Ben Stokes for a short burst?

    Another single to long off.

Is it just me who is annoyed by this?

Sam Michail: Woakes and Stokes to open. Moeen and Root 3 and 4. Bairstow Buttler Foakes as the powerhouse middle order. Curran brothers at 8 and 9. Rashid at 10. Plunkett 11.

  18. SL 80-4published at 33 overs

    Mathews 29, Chandimal 12

Moeen Ali hasn't quite got his length consistent today, I don't think. He's bowled a few full tosses and a few deliveries that are too short.

England need a bit of a spark from somewhere.

Adil Rashid fails to find any serious spin or bounce. Things look pretty simple for Sri Lanka at the minute. It's slow-going but risk free.
