England captain Joe Root on who will play in the second Test: "It will be interesting for sure but I'd rather be in this position than not knowing who to pick. It's a fantastic squad, if the pitch is different we can adapt to that with a different XI.

"It's great to see guys putting the pressure on. Everyone has to contribute. The work ethic has been exceptional. We play to the surface in front of us, it wil be different in Kandy."

Simon James George: I've been critical of England reverse batting order strategy, but fair's fair, it is producing results.

England captain Joe Root on Sky Sports: "To see the guys consistently be on top throughout four days away from home is really pleasing. We had to adapt as the game wore on.

"Traditionally you expect the pitch to deteroriate quickly and turn square here and that didn't happen, we were always planning for rain, there were periods where we had to be very patient and trust our plans.

"To see that work and come off is really pleasing. It's great fun this team, I have so many options and it's great to see the lads dovetail.

"Ben Foakes was special, his innings took great skill and it's very challenging to keep in these conditions. He's a natural. It's great to see someone come in with an attitude of pure enjoyment.

"We know how good Keaton Jennings is, it's been so difficult at the top of the order on some of the wickets in England."

England captain Joe Root: "I'm very proud. The way we played throughout the four days was excellent. From just after lunch on the first day we were in control.

"The partnership between Buttler and Foakes was outstanding. The pitch was tacky on day one. We wanted to go out and score at a decent rate and with that, at least we were 100-5 and not 60-5. The pitch changed after lunch and for Foakes to play an innings of that substance is exactly what we needed.

"We did our homework from a bowling point of view. As a group we managed to build a lot of good pressure. Not just the spinners the seamers as well. We have to make sure we take everything we can from this game and transfer it into the rest of the tour.

"We can't rest on our laurels. I'm glad I don't have to face Rangana Herath, having gotten out to him twice in this match. He's been a marvellous servant for his country and Test cricket in general."

Rangana Herath is on the verge of tears as he speaks to the watching crowds.

"It's time to start a life," he says. A bit bleak.

Rangana Herath may have lost his final Test but he's handed all manner of framed shirts and memorabilia. Like a primary school teacher on the last day of term.

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal: "Our batting was below par during the game and I feel that you can't stay in the game playing like that. England played some outstanding cricket.

"We got a good start in the first session, they were five down, but we couldn't capitalise. Foakes batted really well, we couldn't get the wicket. We need to regroup as a team.

"We have to stick together. It is a hard day for us, we all know how much Rangana Herath has done for us. It is an emotional day and we wish him a good future. We say sorry to him.

"I have a grade one groin strain, I don't know how long it will take, it is up to the physio."

England wicketkeeper Ben Foakes: "It's been a surreal few days, a dream. I was nervous when I walked in at 103-5 in the first innings, I didn't know what the scoreboard was really. It was tough out there, both from a batting and keeping point of view. I've been out to Sri Lanka a few times and that helped me in this match. I don't know about the second Test because Jonny Bairstow should be fit so we'll have to see."

England have not won a Test overseas for so long, so they should keep it simple. Don't change a winning side after a performance like that. Go same again, win the series in Kandy and get Bairstow back into the side in the third Test. Bairstow will get back into this team eventually.

Stuart Broad is hopeful that if he does play anywhere, it will be in Kandy (the second Test) where there is a bit more bounce. Jonny Bairstow has worked hard in the nets this week but he's not had any cricket as such and that will give England a reason to leave him out again. I suspect they will play the same side in the next Test but they will look at number three. Moeen is not a number three. You look at his dismissals in this match and think he'd be better off down the order.
