This looks like being an 'I was there' occasion for England supporters, who number more than 6,000 in Galle.

Andy Thompson from Barmy Travel first came to Galle 16 years ago and he explained the attraction.

“What a wonderful destination," he says. "You’ve got a heritage site in front of us, there’s a fantastic atmosphere and you’re right on top of the action. It is one of the favourite places you go to”

You may remember in the build-up to this game there were stories about England fans being overcharged for the match, but Andy says they are trying to put that behind them now.

"We’ve tried our hardest to get some concessions and we did. They made day five free which is probably now irrelevant, but we did get a few things from Sri Lanka cricket which is fair enough. We made our point and we hope in the future they’ll work with us.”

England need five wickets to win

Oooooooof! Blimey don't leave any more like that.

Rashid rips one that bounces on middle stump but doesn't really turn and it misses off stump by a whisker. Even umpire Marais Erasmus is 'ooooo-ing' behind the flabbergasted Rashid.

Mathews has made his way to tea though. That's the end of the session.

  3. 50 runs

Thwack. Angelo Mathews dispatches a Adil Rashid full toss. That takes him to his second fifty of the match.

Who knew you were all so well traveled.

Moeen bowls another quiet over. We'll squeeze one more in before tea.

Niroshan Dickwella does bemuse me sometimes. In the last over he saw one rag square out of the rough but now he plays a reverse sweep to one pitching in the same area. That gives him two and then one slightly fuller from Rashid is creamed through extra over.

    It worked, I guess.

That's a big call. They've certainly got a lot of options with the ball, as shown by this session. They started with Stokes trying to bounce out the batsmen with Leach's left-arm accuracy. Then we had Anderson's reverse swing and now Rashid's leggies and Moeen's off-spin.

I'm not sure how balanced their batting is.

I think England have the most well balanced team (including the bench) in international cricket currently. The team bats deep and Root has almost all possible bowling options at his command. Variety in spinners (left-right finger/wrist spin), seamers, excellent wicketkeeper-batsmen, attacking middle-order, decent openers and an array of all-rounders to fill up shortcomings in batting or bowling. Skillsets for all sorts of conditions. Just missing a good old-fashioned number three batsman in the Trott mould to become the complete unit.

I've just seen a stat that Mitchell Starc has bowled at an average speed on 94mph in his 10 overs in the one-dayer in Adelaide.

    That's absolutely rapid.

Rashid tosses one right up into the footholes and it turns big back into Dickwella. The batsman just about survives.

It's a double change. Adil Rashid is on. Can he improve on the rubbish he bowled earlier?

  13. SL 171-5published at 61 overs

    Mathews 40, Dickwella 7

Moeen has been brought on to bowl at left-hander Niroshan Dickwella who he dismissed in the first innings. He has two slips with the second stood close with a helmet on. Dickwella chooses to sweep to keep the ball away from those two men.

The Cricket Social panel are going to take on our fiendish quiz during the tea break.

This is England's first Test match since Alastair Cook's retirement, see how many of England's Test debutants you can name since the ex-England captain won his first cap in 2006.

Don't include Rory Burns or Ben Foakes as they are not in here...

    Have a go.

Sri Lanka need 295 to win

"Hit, hit, hit," is the cry as Sri Lanka take a tight single off Anderson. Keaton Jennings runs around at point but is a little slow in getting his throw away and misses anyway. Mathews would have been in had he made his ground.

Anderson still has Foakes up to the stumps but drops short and Mathews cuts for four.

  17. SL 161-5published at 59 overs

    Mathews 33, Dickwella 4

We haven't seen Adil Rashid or Moeen Ali since lunch. It has been Jack Leach non-stop. I called for Leach to be replaced earlier but he has taken two wickets since. We have 25 minutes to go until tea.

Adil Rashid was back in the pie shop this morning. He bowled some real garbage I'm afraid.

England need five wickets to win

Ben Foakes is coming up to the stumps to Jimmy Anderson. This'll test his keeping but should keep Mathews back in his crease.

It looked like this was Anderson's decision so wasn't some sort of insult to Anderson's pace from Foakes or Root.

Anderson continues to find movement but can't break through.
