England might think that Joe Root can bat at three in Asia - it's a different challenge over there than it is in England against the Duke ball. In England, Australia and South Africa, I want Root back at number four but number three might just be an option in Sri Lanka.

  2. "I will miss it"published at 10:52 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2018

Retired Sri Lanka spinner Rangana Herath on Sky Sports: "Losing is never a good result for any team but hopefully the guys will come back strongly for the next two Tests.

"I am in an emotional situation. Everyone has to take a decision at the right time and I am thankful for all those years that I have played.

"I will miss it, of course. I may play some first-class cricket but we will see how it goes. I need to chat with work! I am happy with the talent that we have, we have a winning mindset."

England's spinners were pretty good today. The pitch wasn't a minefield by any means - it's been an excellent pitch. The four-day defeat comes down to some poor defensive technique. It is a worry for Test cricket, but that's an argument for another day.

Bowser: Absolutely sensational win that from England. First ever win in Galle, Benjamin Thomas Foakes ending Jonny Bairstow's test career and Moeen taking wickets for fun. Lovely stuff.

Root's first Test win as captain away from home. A red carpet is now rolled out for Rangana Herath.

Herath run out 5 (SL 250 all out)

What a bizarre end to it all - Sri Lanka go for a two that is totally needless, 40-year-old Rangana Herath runs out of steam and despite a valiant dive he's just short...

Is that a run out?! What a way for Rangana Herath to bow out if so. A completely unnecessary run...

This spell of play always strikes me as uniquely odd in sport - England have a day and a bit to take one wicket, Sri Lanka need 213 runs.

We all know the result. And yet the fielders are still flying around making stops, the crowd are all still there. It's a really odd one.

Great fielding in the covers by (I think) Jos Buttler, diving full length to save a four. Commitment to the cause. Adil Rashid continues his wildcard spell, ragging one square but Suranga Lakmal picks it and slaps him to the fence.

Some bad news from England's camp at the Women's World T20 in West Indies.

Bowling spearhead Katherine Brunt has been forced to withdraw after suffering a flare-up of her longstanding back injury. Brunt will be replaced in England’s squad by Middlesex batter Fran Wilson.

Moeen's bowling is a revelation. His flight, pace and accuracy have improved out of sight. Another outstanding contribution in an outstanding team performace. Playing like this, England are the best tonic for the winter blues.
