England tail-end hero Jack Leach speaking to TMS: "Are you expecting to get some sense out of me right now?

"I got off the pitch and then thought, 'What has Ben Stokes just done?' I was running towards him after he hit the wining runs and it was the best feeling ever.

"I just tried to take one ball at a time. I tried to back up and get two when Ben wanted two. I just wanted to do my job and take it down into smaller chunks. That 92 at Lord's really helped, that's how I batted then too.

"It definitely helped me. I learned if you break it down to one ball at a time, you can get through. And this crowd were amazing."

That is massive for Joe Root. I've been in that situation where your team is really struggling. This is his time to try and win an Ashes series on home turf.

All England captains need a great all-rounder. I had Andrew Flintoff. Mike Brearley had Ian Botham. And Joe Root has Ben Stokes.

You have to remember that colossal spell Stokes bowled as well.

Ben Stokes is called over by Mike Atherton to speak to the TV cameras and the Headingley crowd give him a solid minute of applause and cheers.

    He looks a bit sheepish.

I've never seen a better Test innings. Ever.

To hit the ball like that under that pressure is amazing.

These guys are getting a bit of a break. Much needed.

The fourth Ashes Test starts at Old Trafford on Wednesday 4 September. I've got a ticket.

See you in the party stand.

We thought Australia might struggle this week because Steve Smith was out but they've only lost because of an astonishing innings.

They'll come back. They're tough cookies.

All sorts will be going through Tim Paine's head.

  11. 'The double is on'published at 16:43 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

Ben Stokes on Sky Sports: "It's right up there. We had to win this game to stay in the Ashes and we managed to do it.

"We've managed to keep our hopes alive of doing the double. We've got a bit of break now and hopefully we can hit the ground running in Manchester."

At Lord's after the World Cup we said we would never see anything that special again.

    We just have.

'It's like the applause for a hundred' - Root hits the first run of the morning

More from Joe Root, to TMS: "We've still got two Tests to play after this! It's crazy. It's great to be in the series and to win.

"Jack Leach was calm as you like, cleaning his lenses. He had a bit of an Allan Donald moment at the end their but he rode his luck. You need that.

"We were right up against it throughout the week. A lot of it comes down to Ben Stokes but to get back into it after being 67 all out gives us huge confidence going into two massive games.

"The first innings was poor batting. Two guys got good deliveries and otherwise we were very poor. But we bounced back and proved we've got it in us to bat properly in Test cricket."

Something extraordinary has just happened. This is similar to the scenes at Lord's after the World Cup final.

It was full at 11am. You don't see that much in Test cricket. The crowd sensed something was on. They believed more than anyone.

  15. 'I was in the zone'published at 16:41 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

Ben Stokes on Sky Sports: "When it got down to 20s, I was thinking I should rein it in now. But in the 70s, 60s, 50s, I had to really try to go. I was in the zone, I knew what I needed to do.

"It was unbelievable, it was one I'll never forget. I've got to try to let it sink in now because I don't think I'll be involved with something that again."

I have seen great Test match innings.

But in an Ashes series, when your team is gone, the urn is practically in the Australia dressing room, to do that is something else.

"He's made 92 as a nightwatchman so I backed him, knowing what he had to do. But I couldn't watch the balls going down to him at the end."
