Need 100 to avoid the follow-on

It's a horrible time for Bairstow to be coming out to bat. It's gloomy with the floodlights on, the Aussies are hunting wickets relentlessly. He is at least off the mark.

I worry about Bairstow with this ball nipping back. It's been a real problem for him in Test cricket for a while.

  3. Eng 196-5published at 72.3 overs

Jason Roy should stay off Twitter tonight. He's getting pelters.

That ball was not there to drive. It was similar to his dismissal against Ireland. That's a ball you should be playing a forward defense to. That's poor technique.

    Roy b Hazlewood 22 (Eng 196-5)

Hmmm. England are in big trouble. It's a really good ball from Josh Hazlewood but you still feel Jason Roy should do better.

It nips back and bowls Roy through the gate as he tries to drive.

The camera picks out an England fan with his head in his hands. Yep. It's time for that.

This ball is talking for Australia. Jason Roy is nearly cut in half. Is it reverse swing?

If Root gets 77 in every innings going forward I'm not bothered if he doesn't convert them as it would be a decent average. Maybe the focus should be the remaining batsmen stepping up to the plate?

Nathan Lyon is causing Ben Stokes plenty of problems. There's some welcome relief when the England all-rounder flicks one off his hip for a couple. The Aussies have two slips in for another edge.

The floodlights are on with the ground in shade but the light isn't a problem.

It was another moral victory for the off-spinner.

    No spike on Ultra-edge.

  16. Eng 190-4published at 71.1 overs

    What's happened here?

Tim Paine juggles one behind the stumps and, after clinging on, he's convinced Ben Stokes has edged it.

He runs down to Nathan Lyon but then the Aussies do not review.

Eeeek that's not what England fans want to see from Jason Roy. He has an ugly swipe across the line to a short ball from Josh Hazlewood. He was trying to whack that into Manchester city centre but missed. It's not the time for that, Jase.

There are still plenty of strangled cheers from the crowd but they are as boisterous as they were when England were on top. Ben Stokes does well to keep a bouncer down from in front of his nose.

A lot of the recent criticism of Root seems to be simply because he is not Steve Smith. He's our best batsman by a long, long way and we're lucky to have him. Imagine what our batting line-up would look like without him!
