10 overs to go until the new ball...
Roy 18, Stokes 2
Jason Roy's highest score of the series is 28. A few more shots like this and he will beat that tonight.

Ben Stokes is off the mark and now another good shot from Jason Roy follows. He pushes for three and Nathan Lyon doesn't take the return throw cleanly. The crowd is amused.
Australia have a long-on to Jason Roy and I have absolutely no idea why. He takes a single.

I feel like we might need another one of those amazing innings from Stokes just to keep England in it.
Roy 14, Stokes 0
Jason Roy has settled down a little. He keeps the strike.

Andrew Lafferty: Root makes 77 at Headingley and gets out, he makes 71 at Old Trafford and gets out, he is supposed to be up there with Kohli, Smith and Williamson, those three would have made a 100, Root's conversion rate is so poor in comparison.
Paddy Emmerson: Another 50 another failure to convert to a 100, nice average but not a match winning performance in sight. People class him as a great, he isn't and never will be until he starts consistently converting the 50s.
Joe Root's conversion rate has definitely been mentioned on these pages before. It does not go unnoticed.
Two more to Jason Roy.

Sahil Oberoi: The English media can wax lyrical as much as they like about Root but his failure to consistently convert fifties into hundreds, means he is simply a good Test batsman and nowhere near a great one.
20 overs remain but we can only play until 19:30 BST. England need some dark clouds to roll in.

It's officially 20.

I'm starting to get nervous about how many overs are left in the day.
Roy 12, Stokes 0
Edged... short of slip. Stokes survives.
It's a horrible, horrible watch for England fans again. This feels like the scenario Stokes came to the crease at Headingley in the second innings. He just has to get through to the close.
Ben Stokes on strike for the first time...
Oh that was so out. They've just shown the ball tracking. Root's face was etched with despair.
Back live and Jason Roy hits another good shot, cutting Lyon to the boundary.
What's that saying about one wicket bringing two?

That definitely sounds like the biggest cheer of the day to greet Ben Stokes to the crease.
There are people on their feet as Ben Stokes strides out. England need him again. They are still 322 behind.

Root was caught on the crease - a beautiful bit of bowling. You have to give so much credit to the Australian bowlers this afternoon. They charged in unrewarded and they're starting to get the fruits of their labour.
