I'm smiling broadly, I like the way the West Indies are playing at the moment, but as long as Steve Smith is still there, there is always a chance for Australia.

  2. ouch!

    Aus 149-6published at 32 overs

Yowzer. Oshane Thomas gets serious lift off a length and cracks Steve Smith on the bottom hand.

The Aussie batsman wrenches his right hand off and lets out a yelp of pain.

That snorted up at him and Smith looks angrily at the pitch.

    This is thrilling cricket.

  3. Aus 149-6published at 31.5 overs

Thomas dupes Coulter-Nile with a full ball that tails in and the Aussie number eight just about taps it down past his stumps for a single.

I thought the Australians would be better able to handle the short-pitched bowling than Pakistan but they have been spooked by it.

  5. Aus 148-6published at 31.3 overs

Nathan Coulter-Nile loops a short ball up off the glove into the leg side and is again fortunate not to see it fall to a fielder.

In members' area, spectators rise during the drinks break, maybe for a comfort break, or to pop inside. The problem with that is how many players, subs and support staff are also trying to get into the pavilion. Carlos Brathwaite has to wait patiently to climb the stairs.

    Definitely up there, Geoff.

On that evidence, Australia have a very long tail.

Are those the least two convincing deliveries you have ever seen anyone face?

  10. Aus 148-6published at 31 overs

    Russell 4-0-13-2

And nearly another! Dre Russ rushes Nathan Coulter-Nile with a well-directed short ball and the Aussie number eight loops it up off the top edge.

But Shai Hope can't scramble over in time and the ball drops safe as NCN scrambles a single.

  11. Aus 147-6published at 30.5 overs

A leave that Rahul Dravid might be proud of, but isn't so convincing when Nathan Coulter-Nile does it.

Andre Russell zips it down and the ball just about evades off-stump. So close to two in two.

Carey might be a little disappointed with that, it was a slightly innocuous delivery, there was no foot movement. I wasn't sure he'd got the edge but he walked off straightaway.

  13. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 30.4 overs

    Carey c Hope b Russell 45 (Aus 147-6)

And the strike bowler duly strikes!

Andre Russell angles it across the left-handed Alex Carey, who can't resist prodding at it out there with no real footwork.

The Aussie keeper gets a thin feather on it and his West Indies counterpart Shai Hope completes the catch behind.

West Indies will hope to run through the rest of the line-up at speed now.

Russell has carried a lot of injuries and niggles. It's tough when you finish bowling and you go into the field. It takes a few deliveries to warm up again.

    West Indies need a wicket.

Here's Andre Russell - figures of 1-11 off three overs so far.

Australia making a good recovery after West Indies really wrecked them with the new ball. West Indies just need a wicket.

  18. drinks break

    Aus 146-5published at 30 overs

    Smith 42, Carey 45

Steve Smith doesn't need to be booed to get constant criticism all innings - he's spending most of his time between balls castigating himself for any mishits or missed opportunities.

Must be pretty off-putting to bowl to a man shouting at himself.

Ashley Nurse does a tidy job though, conceding just three from the 30th over.

    Time for a drink.

West Indies might be on top, but it could've been so much better had Sheldon Cottrell not made a bit of a mess of this chance to remove Steve Smith...

Going back to the ticket conversation, there are very, very few empty seats inside Trent Bridge now. Once you take into account how many people there are at the back of the stands, getting food, at the bar or generally milling around, I'd believe it if I was told we're pretty much full.
