Seriously good stuff from the Windies, bringing back the days of fast bowling. I can still see the Aussies winning from here though, Smith at the crease and the Windies often struggle to close out innings.

  2. Aus 96-5published at 23 overs

    Smith 25, Carey 12

Neatly played by Carey, arching his back and angling the bat to use the pace of Thomas and guide the ball over the slip cordon for a welcome boundary, then striking another through mid-off that bounces just in front of Holder. Thomas thinks about a rant at his captain but wisely decides to look to the heavens instead.

Australia need to look at making 250 as a starting point. If these two can be there at the end, then maybe they can push that up to 270.

And with Australia's pace attack on a used pitch, that might be enough.

  4. Aus 86-5published at 22 overs

A maiden from Holder to Carey, only the second of the match. No record scores here today that's for sure. But perhaps we will have a low-scoring classic. Stay tuned.

I've got a chilling feeling about the 1996 semi-final between West Indies and Australia.

Australia were 15-4 but then Stuart Law scored 72 to help them post 207-8 and West Indies were bowled out for 202.

  7. Aus 86-5published at 21 overs

    Smith 24, Carey 3

A near yorker from Thomas on the leg stump and Smith deftly raises a foot in flamingo fashion to turn it away for a single, before Carey lifts one just out of the reach of a leaping gully.

Talking of England bouncing the Aussies out? Should remember how we've won the last four home Ashes, then remember what happened when we tried to bounce Pakistan out a few days back!

  9. Aus 83-5published at 20 overs

    Run-rate 4.15

Holder returns from the Pavilion End and Carey fends off another short one to get off the mark from his 15th delivery faced, to some ironic cheers. The ironic cheer is an ever-present in a sporting crowd isn't it? I suppose it's heard of a fashion in the House of Commons too, but a man dressed as a banana shows the lighter side of sport.

    Carey on 0

It was indeed too high from the tall paceman and Carey survives, West Indies losing their one permitted review in the innings.

It is completely un-English to want anything other than the Aussies skittled out. Hopefully the selectors are seeing this struggle with pace and licking their lips at the prospect of Archer in the Ashes.

Australia are in all sorts of trouble. It wasn't that short and wasn't there for the pull shot.
