  • Windies' quicks impressed early on with hostile bouncer barrage

  1. Aus 143-5published at 29 overs

Alex Carey leans back and angles a short ball deftly down towards third man and picks up two as Sheldon Cottrell double clutches before throwing in.

Carey then tickles the last down towards wide fine leg, where Ashley Nurse - who had a total mare in the field against England in their ODI series earlier this year - puts in a good diving stop to keep it to two.

Carey came into this match having only managed one half-century in his last 18 List A knocks.

Carlos Brathwaite replaces captain Jason Holder in the attack. He has figures of 0-23 off his five overs so far.

Nurse's spell is going to be an important one for Jason Holder, ideally if he can have five or six overs from him he can rotate the quicker bowlers in short spells.

  5. Aus 137-5published at 28 overs

Ashley Nurse tidies up and concedes three more singles from the last four balls. Not much turn on offer.

Jason Holder will want him to offer some control to give the big quicks a decent rest before they return.

  6. Aus 134-5published at 27.2 overs

Niiiiice. Alex Carey unfurls the reverse sweep and whacks it away to the fence.

No need to have a look at the off-spinner for the Aussie keeper.

Smith wasn't having a look was he? Went for the big angled drive and it didn't miss the stumps by much.

  8. Aus 130-5published at 27.1 overs

Yeesh! Steve Smith inside edges a flaying drive just past his stumps off Ashley Nurse's first ball.

That was inches away from leg stump.

  10. Aus 129-5published at 27 overs

    Run rate 4.78

Alex Carey tucks off his hips for a couple more.

First over of spin in this one coming up - off-spinner Ashley Nurse is coming into the attack.

Alex Carey is now getting into his stride.

  12. Aus 127-5published at 26.3 overs

Steve Smith drives Jason Holder to the diving fielder in the covers and only picks up one, castigating himself for not smacking it for four.

Alex Carey shows the way though, driving sublimely through the covers to the fence. Shot!

This is a good recovery from Australia, led by Steve Smith. Six an over from here takes them to 269.

  14. Aus 122-5published at 26 overs

    Smith 36, Carey 27

Better from Sheldon Cottrell after his previous expensive over, conceding just three runs.

The last is a decent bumper that Alex Carey sways under before looking to the umpire.

    No wide there though.

Thanks Jamie. What a cracking match so far. The pace and bounce from the West Indies bowlers is brilliant, but it's the skill on show that makes it so effective.

England got it wrong against Pakistan by bowling too short so they were too often signalled wide on height or used up their one for the over too soon.

Instead, the Windies quicks routinely got it up between the upper chest and the neck of the Aussie top order. Brutal and beautiful bowling.

Key moment here though - can Jason Holder's side get another burst or will Australia work their way to a challenging total?

Sheldon Cottrell seemed to misjudge that, running round instead of towards the ball.

His feet slipped from under him as well. His angles were all wrong there.

  18. Aus 119-5published at 25 overs

    Run-rate 4.76

Cottrell's problems continue as he slips at the crucial time in pursuit of a Smith hook and slides to the turf as the ball trickles away for the former captain's fourth boundary. A good recovery from 38-4 for the Australians then, some bigger sky-scrapers on the chart and to see if they can continue it's time to hand over to Jack Skelton.

This is where Alex Carey has come into this side - he's got a great temperament by all accounts. He needs to dig in here.

  20. Aus 110-5published at 24 overs

Cottrell's opening spell produced 2-11 but he offers width to Carey and the diminutive left-hander calmly cuts successive boundaries, then drives gloriously through the covers for his fifth four as 14 come from the over.. Looks a well-organised batsman, the South Australian, surprisingly just the one ODI fifty so far.
