92mph, that one. It looked as though it just nipped back on him.
Root, promoted to open in absence of injured Roy, becomes first England batsman to score three WC hundreds
Morgan (back) & Roy (hamstring) both injured and don't bat in England's run chase

Mark Wood is convinced this is out.
Mark Wood zips it very full into Shai Hope's pads.
Good shout. Big appeal. Not given.
Eoin Morgan asks Wood and Jos Buttler. And sends for the review.

Chris Gayle will be kicking himself a bit. He'd just got himself in. Why go for the long side?

A slower delivery from Liam Plunkett, and the Universe Boss heads back to the pavilion! That is really intelligent bowling.

Eoin Morgan loves Liam Plunkett in these middle overs. It was a clever bit of bowling, Gayle hitting into the long side at the Hampshire Bowl, and it was a bit of a top edge.
Gayle c Bairstow b Plunkett 36 (WI 54-2)
Jonny Bairstow doesn't drop these!
Canny bowling from Liam Plunkett digging in a slower ball short and Chris Gayle's eyes light up, trying to smack it out of the ground over the big square leg boundary.
But the pace off the ball means Gayle miscues it high off the bat, Bairstow jogs round, settles himself and pouches it.
Mark Wood's drop costs only 21 runs in the end. England get Gayle at a crucial time.

It was another cross-seam delivery and it was a bit too wide for Jos Buttler to grab.
Close. Shai Hope tries to guide to third man but doesn't get as much on it as he would've hope.
The ball flies just beyond the dive of wicketkeeper Jos Buttler. That's four.

Vinod: Gayle is batting well, but what a beautiful bowling display by Archer & Wokes so far! Come on England.

You get the feeling that Gayle has a look for an over, just tries to line you up a little bit. He's mellowed.
Run rate 3.91
Good from Mark Wood, tight lines to Chris Gayle and starting with five dot balls in a row.
Gayle guides the last along the ground just past the diving backward point for a single to keep the strike.
Mark Wood has a chance to make amends for dropping Chris Gayle by getting him out now.
The Durham man is into the attack.

As much as the cricketing logic to leave Moeen out seems sound given the juicy nature of the pitch, you can't help but think he'd be playing if he'd been getting runs.

Barry Bantz: England lose this and they could be out of the CWC. Aus, India, NZ looking strong and WI then finish above England.
Brian Willmott: Mark Wood is probably feeling a bit queasy at the moment, not just because he's dropped the main man but also he will have to bowl at him shortly.
Gayle 35, Hope 6
Shai Hopes cracks a drive towards the covers but Eoin Morgan makes a superb diving stop.
Decent start by Liam Plunkett, conceding five from the over.
First bowling change for England.
Liam Plunkett replaces Chris Woakes.

It's got the makings of a decent game, this. It's just simmering away.
A general rule of cricket is don't drop Chris Gayle...
