It's the 83mph of Woakes which is causing the West Indies problems. He's bowling the perfect length - and it's seam not swing which is doing the damage.
And now Shai Hope edges just short of the slips.

You don't see angry responses from Chris Woakes often, but he gave one there. But it's not an easy chance. Wood got it in his hands but as his elbows hit the ground, it pops out.
Sickener for England. Mark Wood had it but it dropped out of his hands as he landed.
Chris Gayle slices it high off the outside edge as he flays at Chris Woakes.
The ball loops up and Wood runs in from third man, gets there, grabs it but can't compete the gather as his elbows hit the ground.
Big moment. Will Gayle make England pay?
Beauty! Jofra Archer just beats the outside edge of Shai Hope's bat with a superb back of a length delivery that nips away.
Hope edges the next just wide of the cordon for one.
Archer finishes up by rushing Chris Gayle with a well-directed bumper. Gayle takes his eyes off it and just about fends it away for a single.
An expensive over - 11 from it. But promise for Archer if he can keep getting that bounce and movement.
Gayle 14, Hope 0
It's short and Gayle taps it into the leg side to pick up a single to get off strike.
Bang! Chris Gayle swipes the next ball through mid-wicket for four more.
How will Archer respond?
Chris Gayle has had enough.
Jofra Archer pitches it up and Gayle stands still and whacks it back down the ground for four.
Archer did well to leap over that in time before it cracked his shin.

The score predictor is 291. West Indies would take that right now.
Woakes 3-2-2-1
Chris Woakes sends down a maiden over that would be more familiar to Test match viewers.
Tight lines and lengths. Shai Hope watchful, defending or leaving all six.

Chris Gayle won't panic - he often takes his time. Even in T20 cricket.
Andy Zaltzman

The last time Chris Gayle played here, he was 1 off 16 balls (he was 1 off 15 before that edged four) and then he hit 39 off his next 12.

Brian Willmott: I think David Willey would have bowled well in these conditions. England need to see the back of Gayle and Hope as quickly as possible.

Southampton might only be two-thirds full, but the cheer that greeted the dismissal of Lewis was one of the loudest I've heard so far in this World Cup.
Gayle 5, Hope 0
The first boundary of the day but it's a very streaky one as Chris Gayle tries to short-arm pull a length ball from Jofra Archer and inside edges it past his stumps.

Evin Lewis just lost his balance, and there was a hint of swing. This is perfect for England - a bit of nibble, an early wicket, and West Indies in two minds about how they should play.

It's that very full length again and Lewis played around it. That's good for Woakes. He hasn't had the easiest tournament so far but he's bowled beautifully this morning.
Lewis b Woakes 2 (WI 4-1)
What a ripper!
Terrific set up by Chris Woakes, keeping Evin Lewis bogged down before pushing it very full.
Lewis goes to clip to leg but plays all round it, the ball flicking off the pad on it's way to knocking off the bails.
An early breakthrough and an ideal start for England so far.
