It looked at first as though it had crashed into the West Indies badge on Shai Hope's helmet. That was quick.
Root, promoted to open in absence of injured Roy, becomes first England batsman to score three WC hundreds
Morgan (back) & Roy (hamstring) both injured and don't bat in England's run chase
Windies bowled out for 212 in 44.4 overs - Pooran 63, Wood 3-18, Archer 3-30
Russell and Gayle were both dropped - England have now dropped as many catches as Pakistan in this WC (8)

Yowzer. Jofra Archer sends down a cross-seam bumper that Shai Hope has no idea about.
The Windies batsman gets his arms up and bends his head down, in full protective mode. The ball ends up cracking off his bat handle and he gets a single.
Shai Hope taps off his pads round the corner and Chris Gayle sets off. Hope isn't interested at all and Gayle has to turn and make his ground.
Lucky that didn't go straight to a fielder.
Agreed, Ian.
It looked like Archer was going to have a rest but he will continue into his fifth over now...

Ian Archdeacon: I would like to see Archer bowl a yorker to Gayle. Yes he has a good short ball but the batsmen are expecting those. Woakes showed it works on a pitch that offers a bit of swing.
Gayle is now the leading runscorer in ODIs between these two sides, overtaking Sir Viv Richards.

A streaky start but Chris Gayle has marmalised some fine boundaries since.
Shai Hope looks to work Chris Woakes into leg but gets a leading edge that flies right where gully would have been.
Hope gets a single and Chris Gayle defends the last.
Mark Wood will be wise not to lock eyes with Chris Woakes.
Chris Gayle skips forward and wallops it down the ground for a big six.

Typical Chris Gayle. Age might be getting to him but the power is still there. The eyesight is still good enough.
Chris Gayle cross-bat slaps Chris Woakes over mid-wicket for four.
TV pictures have picked up Jonny Bairstow turning round to Mark Wood at third man and telling him to be ready for the big edge.
Ah.

DB: Curran would not have dropped that catch off Gayle - he should be in the team instead of Wood. Better fielder and better with the bat

This is a contest within a contest, Archer versus Gayle. Gayle's taken a couple of quick singles, too, so I think he's up for this.
Gayle 21, Hope 1
Chris Gayle takes a single and Jofra Archer then sends down four dot balls in a row at Shai Hope.
England should be pitching it up more to Gayle, how Mitchell Starc did the other day.

Oh, Jason Roy does not look happy walking off the field. He might have done an ankle or a hammy and by the way he's looking, he looks as though he knows he's popped something.
Jason Roy was chasing after that Chris Gayle edge from point and looks to have injured himself.
He's pulled up again and is limping off to be replaced by James Vince.
That could be a hamstring injury.

Chris Gayle has decided he's going to take on Jofra Archer.
Chris Gayle has no time for the Jofra Archer hype.
He's going after the young gun, pulling away through mid-wicket again for four.
Chris Woakes should have got Chris Gayle in the last over.
He did for Evin Lewis earlier though...
