Afghanistan desperately needed that.
Eoin Morgan walks out to the middle, moving much more freely than when we last saw him on the field for England.

That's tremendous bowling, the back of the hand slower ball. He's got some big guns on him! The fielding has been poor but that's a tremendous grab on his follow-through, quite low down to his right. Bairstow just played it a little too soon, trying to punch it down the ground.

That is a brilliant caught and bowled! Delight for Afghanistan!
Bairstow c&b Gulbadin 90 (Eng 164-2)
Great take! There'll be no century for Jonny Bairstow today.
He is a little early on a slower ball from Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib and chips one back down the wicket. It goes quickly but Gulbadin ducks down and clings on to a great return catch by his knees.
The former body builder poses with both biceps bulging to celebrate. Impressive all round.

England have played nicely. I wouldn't say it was an early storm from Afghanistan but there is always a concern you can lose two or three early wickets and let Afghanistan into the contest.
The fielding has been atrocious.
Run-rate 5.62
Jonny Bairstow's aggression to Rashid Khan has seen Afghanistan's premier bowler removed from the attack.
Mujeeb ur Rahman returns and is knocked into the outfield for ones and twos.
Bairstow moves to 90 not out.

This is Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root's fourth hundred partnership in ODI cricket. They currently average 69 per partnership.
Jonny Bairstow has hit three sixes so far. This has been the biggest...

Got a day off from work today. Tried to buy tickets online last night, but all affordable seats sold out. So why is there an empty stadium today? Something needs to be done about these ticket touts.

People complaining about empty seats at Old Trafford but I'm not surprised. I checked last week & the cheapest tickets left were £68! If Afghanistan batted first it could have been over in 3 hours or so. Overall prices in England for international cricket are scandalous.

Bairstow 87, Root 42
This ground is certainly fuller than it was earlier on. The big temporary stand is 90% full but there are empty spaces as Steph's picture shows. I received an email yesterday saying tickets were available for this game but that's different to what a lot of you have been saying.
It's a strange one.
Three singles from Gulbadin's sixth over.

Two things in this picture. The scoreboard between the tiers of the stand is excellent. The number of empty seats is less so.
After Bairstow's slow start - his slowest fifty opening the batting for England - he is now almost up to a run a ball. He has 86 from 88 balls. Joe Root is just doing Joe Root things and is into the forties.

It's like a tennis shot - he gets the right-hand through the ball and aims flat.
Thwack. Jonny Bairstow is upping his scoring now. He pummels a flat drive just a few metres above the height of bowler Mohammad Nabi's head and it carries all the way for six.

The 100 partnership came up in 16.1 overs.
Bairstow 79, Root 38
That driven four for Bairstow brought up the hundred partnership between the country's two greatest Yorkshiremen.
The poor fielding actually spoiled a decent over from Rashid Khan.
This isn't as bad as some of the other efforts in the field from Afghanistan but it's just the fact all these mistakes are adding up.
The dive is put in on the boundary rope but the ball is flicked back onto the body and it dribbles away for four more to Bairstow.
Thanks Amy.
Yet again James Vince must be kicking himself. He's missed out on another chance to score a big score for England.
Rashid Khan continues...
