Simon Beasor: So if the ground is half empty and the touts hands are full, how come i was 'unsuccessful' in the main ticket ballot last year? Sort it out ECB!

Charlie, Hull: At work watching the in-play clips can't believe how many empty seats there are. Tried numerous times to get tickets and told all sold out. Someone got their numbers wrong!!

Ollie, Tring: How is the ground is half full? You couldn't buy a ticket for an England game when tickets were first released 'due to demand'...

The majority of the crowd have got distracted by the arrival of the Afghan president, who is getting a standing ovation from the stands as he walks into the pavilion.

    Time for a hydration break.

England are starting to get a bit of a move on. This is good.

    Wallop!

Jonny Bairstow dances out of his crease and smashes the ball back in Gulbadin Naib's direction. Gulbadin throws himself to the ground and then turns to watch the ball bounce into the boundary rope.

The difference in noise when a boundary is hit between today and Sunday when Pakistan and India were playing is quite something.

A proper full toss from Rahmat, and Joe Root's eyes light up. He's down to sweep in the blink of an eye and the ball skids through mid-wicket and into the ropes.

Good running from these two, as usual, and they keep things ticking along.

Afghanistan are doing a good job on Jonny Bairstow. We know how quickly he can score.

  10. Eng 75-1published at 16 overs

Hmm. Jonny Bairstow's just getting a touch frustrated at being tied down. He flashes a drive at Gulbadin's final delivery and an outside edge bobbles away for a single.

And now Gulbadin is bringing himself back on. Clearly he fancied a change of ends.

Afghanistan are keeping England guessing and up to a point have kept them under control. England have been cagey. They don't want to lose wickets and want to be in a position where they can press the accelerator later to make sure they get a substantial total. It doesn't have to be mammoth. They just want to win this game.

Tidy enough from Mohammad Nabi, but Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow milk the field for a smattering of singles.

That was a beautiful shot for six from Bairstow. It was a perfectly reasonable ball but a very bold shot and a very good one. No disgrace for Rahmat.

Another shuffle of the pack from Gulbadin, taking himself off and bringing Mohammad Nabi back on.

Can we please get the best sports psychologist in the world to have a few sessions with Vince and get him in the Test team at three. He is just class and throws it away every time. A mental problem rather than a technical one.

James Vince is the 21st Century equivalent of Mark Ramprakash. Looks great but isn't. Appearances are usually deceptive.

Well, Jonny Bairstow read that one alright...

A huge swing of the arms and wham, the ball goes back down the ground and crashes into the sightscreen.

    Hello!

Rahmat's first ball turns and beats Jonny Bairstow's outside edge as he pushes forward in defence. The ball rears up at the keeper, hitting him in the chest, as Bairstow prods at the pitch.
