This is James Vince's ninth ODI innings and only once has he been out for less than 15 but just once has he reached 50.

  2. Eng 60-1published at 13 overs

Gulbadin Naib brings himself on to bowl and gets Jonny Bairstow driving loosely away from his body, but there's enough bat on ball to allow them to nab a single.

Joe Root almost chops onto his stumps and Gulbadin, maybe a little irked at how this match has gone so far, feigns throwing the ball at the stumps as Root pushes a drive back at him. Gulbadin glares at Root, who just grins.

  4. Eng 59-1published at 12 overs

    Bairstow 24, Root 7

Joe Root continues on his merry way, rotating the strike and finding the singles, before cutting the final ball of the over through point for four. Lovely stuff.

    And there goes Nabi's off-spin!

Jonny Bairstow gets down on one knee and slog-sweeps as hard as he can to force a four over mid-wicket.

Time for a change of bowling.

Here's Mohammad Nabi and his off-spin.

In 25 ODIs since the beginning of the 2017 Champions Trophy, this is England's second lowest score after 10 overs.

They were 34-4 against Australia at Old Trafford last summer chasing a small total but batting first this is the lowest score England have had.

  8. Eng 48-1published at 11 overs

Just two singles from Mujeeb Ur Rahman's latest over.

I think I want James Vince to be better than he is. He's just so, so good to watch - but there's always a sense of inevitability about his innings.

Patrick Brennan: Wow. James Vince out for a pleasant-looking 26. Did NOT see that coming...

Mark Poole: Will England stop thinking James Vince can hack it as an international cricketer? The guy has talent and maybe a nice guy but he clearly cannot hack it at the elite level.

  11. Eng 46-1published at 10 overs

    Dawlat 5-0-30-1

We've just seen a replay of that James Vince dismissal - Dawlat got that ball to climb on Vince. It seemed to brush his shoulder or the front of his helmet as he chased it with the bat.

  12. Eng 45-1published at 9.4 overs

    Here's Joe Root...

...and he gets a wayward bouncer first ball that he ignores. That'll be a wide.

It is a typical Vince innings. He had looked threatening, had timed the ball nicely but has not got a great deal to show for it.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 9.3 overs

    Vince c Mujeeb b Dawlat 26 (Eng 44-1)

    Gone!

James Vince gonna James Vince. It's short from Dawlat Zadran and Vince flaps at it, half-hook, half-pull. A top edge balloons up and Mujeeb, stationed at short fine leg, takes a simple catch. Both opening bowlers combine to take the first wicket.

Now that's how you do it!

James Vince under edges a pull and keeper Ikram Ali Khil, diving to his left, gets his mitt on the ball and stops it escaping for four.

    Stephan Shemilt

If you didn't know, you'd be hard-pressed to identify this as a World Cup game. The empty seats, the relaxed atmosphere, the gentle cricket and the awful Afghanistan fielding.

  18. Eng 42-0published at 9 overs

Dawlat Zadran, having watched his team-mates misfield of his bowling, does exactly the same at short fine leg, missing the ball completely and allowing England to nab a single.

    Dreadful.

That was in the air for such a long time. Nabi just completely misjudged it. That should have been a chance. He should have got to that.

  20. dropped catch

    Close!published at 8 overs

    Eng 40-0

    James Vince almost holes out!

He pulls Dawlat but it's not convincing, the ball flying high into the air off the top-edge. Mohammad Nabi on the fence follows it but he doesn't quite judge it well enough, diving forward and missing the ball by a good yard or so.
