It belongs to Warwickshire's 19-year-old Rob Yates, who kept title hopefuls Somerset at bay to make a career-best 139 not out on day one at Edgbaston.

Leaders Essex again looked in good nick despite only 53 overs being possible at Canterbury, while Luke Wood's 'five-for' gave bottom club Notts a great start at Scarborough.

Durham's Alex Lees played the day's major innings in Division Two - 181 against Leicestershire - and Sussex's Ollie Robinson was at one stage on course to take all 10 before having to settle for 8-34 as Middlesex were skittled for just 75.

A rain-delayed start meant Hampshire's innings didn't get underway until early afternoon, but it was a bright opening with Felix Organ reaching 26, before opening partner Ian Holland struck a half-century.

Captain James Vince looked set to follow suit, but fell three runs short of his 50, to the bowling of Morne Morkel.

During an evening session broken-up by a stoppage for bad light, Liam Dawson and Aneurin Donald looked settled heading for the close, but Rikki Clarke accounted for both of them in what could prove to be a very significant late contribution.

Clarke finished with figures of 5-52 from 19 overs and will be looking for more wickets to finish off the Hampshire innings tomorrow, in this finely poised contest.

Australian Alex Carey plays out the final two balls of the day from Nathan Sowter, content to bide his time in his bid to mark his first Championship innings for Sussex with a half-century.

He will resume on 46 not out, with Luke Wells contributing 52 to an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 113 that has carried them into a 53-run lead.

It was the only substantial partnership on the opening day after Middlesex were bowled out in just 21.4 overs, with Stevie Eskinazi (24) the only batsman to reach double figures.

Ollie Robinson took the first eight Middlesex wickets to fall, but had to settle for 8-34 after Tom Haines and Will Beer dashed his hopes of a full house.

Middlesex 75 v Sussex 119-3

Nathan Sowter overpitches and Luke Wells hammers it away for four to reach a 121-ball half-century.

Wells and Alex Carey have put on 104 so far.

Keaton Jennings hits a boundary off Lukas Carey in the final over at Colwyn Bay and will resume on day two just four runs short of a half-century.

Tom Bailey marked his return to action with 4-50 and Danny Lamb also claimed four wickets as the Division Two leaders bowled out their closest rivals in 60.4 overs.

Charlie Hemphrey (56) and Samit Patel (54) - the latter on his Glamorgan debut - batted well, but it took bold hitting by Carey (51*) and Michael Hogan (32) to secure a couple of batting points.

Lancashire lost Alex Davies for 32 before a rain interruption, but they will be well satisfied with their efforts so far.

Ollie Rayner plays out a maiden from Simon Harmer to end proceedings at Canterbury, with Division One leaders Essex on top, thanks to some brilliant bowling by Mohammad Amir.

After 9.1 overs at the start of play, the teams had to wait until 15:30 to re-start the game after rain arrived at the Spitfire Ground.

But Kent's hopes of a big total were undermined as Amir (3-30) and the consistent Sam Cook (3-25) sent four batsmen packing for single-figure scores.

The exceptions were Daniel Bell-Drummond (55) and Ollie Robinson (35), who put on 68 before Amir bowled them both in successive overs late on.

An awkward 19-over mini-session ends with Gloucestershire 154 behind with eight wickets standing.

But the promotion hopefuls can be satisfied with their efforts on the opening day after Ryan Higgins' 5-54 helped them bowl out Derbyshire for 200.

They managed to eke out a bonus point, thanks to the efforts of Fynn Hudson-Prentice (38) and Logan van Beek (34*) after they had been reduced to 164-9.

The visitors lost James Bracey and Gareth Roderick in reply, but Miles Hammond (16*) flicked van Beek for four in the final over as he and Chris Dent (20*) saw it through to stumps.

The players are back out on the pitch and Morne Morkel resumes battle with Hampshire's Aneurin Donald and Liam Dawson.

Durham lose Jack Burnham for 86 shortly before the close at the Riverside, but that's doesn't take the gloss off what has been a very productive opening day against Leicestershire.

The main contributor to their healthy total was opener Alex Lees, who reached three figures for the third time this season and made 181 before falling lbw to Mohammad Abbas.

He hit 25 fours and shared a stand of 147 with Burnham after Australia's Peter Handscomb was out for 29 in his first Championship innings for the club.

Northamptonshire are in prime position to establish a healthy first-innings lead after bowling out Worcestershire for 186 on the opening day at Wantage Road.

Brett Hutton (6-57) took five wickets with the new ball as the Pears were reduced to 31-6, and although Moeen Ali made 42, their eventual total was mainly the result of good batting by their lower order, with Joe Leach making 53 not out off 30 balls.

The home side lost both openers cheaply but Rob Keogh (53) put on 102 with Alex Wakely, who was still there on 63 at stumps, together with nightwatchman Nathan Buck.

A total of 4,255 people filed through the gates at the North Marine Ground in Scarborough today to watch Yorkshire take on Notts.

During the morning they saw Luke Wood dismantle the Yorkshire top order, picking up five wickets in a devastating spell of fast-bowling.

Reeling on 38-5, Yorkshire were indebted to Jonny Tattersall (92) and Tim Bresnan (58) whose partnership put on 121 for the sixth wicket and finally gave the supporters something to cheer about.

Liam Patterson-White starred with the ball in the afternoon, picking-up four wickets to see Yorkshire bowled out for 232 in 76.1 overs.

In response, Ben Slater (29) and Jake Libby (12) safely negotiated 17 overs to see Notts head into day two trailing by 191 runs, but with all ten wickets remaining.

But the star of the day for the home side is 19-year-old Rob Yates, who came to the crease in the second over when Dom Sibley was out for a duck and is still there on 139 not out - his maiden first-class century.

The left-hander put on 153 for the second wicket with Will Rhodes (82) and has faced 286 ball so far and hit 22 fours.

Craig Overton was the most successful bowler for second-placed Somerset with 2-70, but they have enjoyed much better days than this one.

The gloom has descended upon the Kia Oval, bringing play to a halt.

Donald and Dawson's partnership is worth 29 but they'll have to wait to add to it.

The umpires hope to re-start play at 18:15 at Colwyn Bay following a rain hold-up, with leaders Lancashire 64-1 in reply to Glamorgan's 257 all out.

Northants have lost Rob Keogh for 53, but they are 128-3 after 41 overs after bowling out Worcestsrshire for 186. Alex Wakely is 57 not out.

Luke Wells and Alex Carey are just two runs short of a 50 partnership for Sussex against Middlesex, quite an effort in the context of today's play at Hove. Sussex are 63-3, just 14 behind Middlesex's first innings total.

Jack Burnham has progressed to 81 not out, with Durham 350-4 in the 90th over against Leicestershire. They have four batting points and plenty of overs to earn the fifth on the second morning.

Gloucestershire's openers have safely negotiated the first 10 overs against Derbyshire, reaching 21-0 in reply to the home side's 200 all out.
