Some reaction from Notts coach Paul Franks now after his bottom of the table side, 42 points adrift at the start of the round, closed 269 runs behind at 35-2, having secured maximum bowling points by dismissing Kent for 304 in 81.4 overs.

"I think we were excellent in the first session but we perhaps didn’t hold them in the second session with the same economy that we would have liked," he admitted.

"We’ve seen a pitch that has got a bit in it for all of the bowlers and hopefully we can work hard tomorrow in that first session and build a platform where we can go and put a first innings total on the board that we are happy with."

Second-place Somerset, two points behind Essex going into this round, missed out on a bonus point by just one run after being dismissed for 199 at Taunton.

The home side, still seeking their first Championship Division One title, were 85-6 at one point but then removed Gary Ballance late on to at least secure a bonus bowling point as Yorkshire closed 129 behind at 70-3.

At the top of the table leaders Essex have had a testing day in the sunshine at Edgbaston as Warwickshire closed on 269-3, easing any relegation concerns they might have had by securing two bonus points. Just the one bonus bowling point for Essex, with spinner Simon Harmer taking all three to fall on day one

Notts began the day at the foot of the table on 51 points with no wins after 11 games and will need a big turnaround tomorrow against Kent after Darren Stevens held the visitors together with 88 and chipped in with the early wicket of Jake Libby, his 499th scalp at this level.

Much will depend on Ben Slater.

He resumes on 19 not out with night-watchman Luke Fletcher.

“At times we bowled really well in partnerships and at other times we leaked too many runs. Darren Stevens played well, so all credit to him for that. He mixed his aggression well and at times his decision-making was strong and he played some good shots.”

“I’m pleased with that. At the start of the day we were a little bit unsure what that wicket was going to do really but it felt like a ‘bat first’. It was a used wicket, so we felt that was the best way of going about things.

“I thought we applied ourselves really well in the first session but in the middle session we started to accelerate and be more positive and take the game to them.”

“To then pick up two wickets at the end, overall, it’s a good day!”

A very eventful opening day at the Ageas Bowl, all the 17 wickets falling to seam. Rikki Clarke took 5-21 for Surrey and left-armer Keith Barker, the former Blackburn Rovers footballer, has 3-28 so far for Surrey.

Gloucestershire are struggling and would be in an even worse position but for James Bracey's innings of 61.

Just 103 runs added after Bracey's dismissal in 40.3 overs of batting.

Outstanding spell of fast and accurate bowling from Chris Jordan who took 3-49.

Sussex cruising at four an over in reply, thanks largely to Philip Salt, now on 53 off 60 balls.

A good day for evergreen all-rounder Rikki Clarke, taking 5-21 to add to his 7-74 in the first innings the last time he faced Hampshire last month. Clarke, who has made three fifties this year in Division One, is still out there on 31 as Surrey look to acquire a first innings lead.

Two overs left at the Ageas Bowl, the visitors 10 behind with four wickets intact.

Keaton Jennings has not played for England since February and has had a steady Championship summer, with four fifties at an average of 29, a best of 97. He has finished on 12 in the fading light at Old Trafford, with Division Two leaders Lancashire 224 behind, having earlier claimed maximum bowling points as the visitors slipped from 107-1, despite Billy Godleman's 111.

A good day for Leicestershire. They recovered well after slumping to 28-2 inside 13 overs.

A key partnership of 122 between Hassan Azad (86) and Mark Cosgrove, who made 65.

George Rhodes has 51 not out from 149 balls.

Great start for Middlesex with Steven Finn taking 4-41 in a Durham rout, but no Middlesex batsman has managed more than 24 in reply.

Darren Stevens began his ‘farewell tour’ with an impressive innings of 88 as Kent posted 304 against Notts at Trent Bridge.

The 43-year old, who will be allowed to leave Kent at the end of the season, after 15 years of service, plundered 10 fours and two sixes in his 90-ball knock as Kent made 304 all out.

In the final 12 overs of the day Notts reached 35-2, with Stevens topping off a fabulous day, individually, with one of the wickets, the 43-year-old's 499th first-class scalp.

Notts are 42 points adrift at the foot of the table.

The last over of the day will be bowled by Darren Stevens.

He's had a useful day. 88 runs and the wicket of Jake Libby, his 499th in First Class cricket.

He shapes the ball away from Fletcher. The last ball is straight and safely pushed to mid-on.
