    De Kock 22, Bavuma 5

    I wouldn't argue with that.

The fact Woakes still has five slips tells you how ahead in the game they are. The phrase 'he's a good cricketer' has almost become a nicer way of saying 'he's a bits and pieces player' in recent years but Chris Woakes really is a really good cricketer. Runs, wickets and keeps things tight.

LordFrampton: The only South African players to come out of this with an improved reputation are Nortje and Maharaj.

  3. SA 70-4published at 33 overs

There's something about a short, right-handed batsman. Ollie Pope, Sachin Tendulkar, Kusal Mendis, Temba Bavuma. I realise there's a range of records there but they all look good.

There are 16 overs left in the day. We're not getting all of those in in 45 minutes.

With England, it's been a team performance but for South Africa there has only been the odd individual performance which has given them a sniff at some points.

South Africa are definitely a team low on confidence but, as I have said before in this series, they have three or four very good players.

Quinton de Kock is one of those. He'd get in most teams in the world. He times one beautifully down the ground for four.

South Africa aren't a poor side but they're playing some poor cricket. England have upped their game massively since that first Test, they've played fantastic.

  7. SA 63-4published at 31 overs

    De Kock 16, Bavuma 3

Temba Bavuma is just 5ft 3in. That's two inches shorter than former England batsman tuned selector James 'Titch' Taylor. The stumps almost go up to Bavuma's hips.

This is his 40th Test but he has only scored one hundred. That was against England in Stokes' Cape Town Test of 2016.

As Bavuma replaces Du Plessis in the middle, I wonder if that is about to happen with the Test captaincy. Bavuma is the vice-captain but has been out of the side following a poor run of form in Tests. He recorded his highest first-class score last week to win a recall and it would be make a massive transformation statement if he were to be appointed to lead the Test side.

  9. SA 63-4published at 30 overs

It seems Temba Bavuma is a popular man around these parts. There's a huge roar as he gets off the mark.

Faf du Plessis was shaking his head when that decision was shown on the big screen. I think he feels he has been unlucky and that everything is going against him.

Quite often you might think the ball is going to hit the stumps because the batsman is in an uncomfortable position, almost falling over, like Faf du Plessis was there.

I thought it was a good decision by the umpire.

Here's Temba Bavuma at number six after his recall. England have five slips with Root sensing the kill.

That looked high on the replay, but the computer says umpire's call. Faf du Plessis has been put out of his misery and so have the rest of us. I don't know what he was up to - they need to try and win this game.

Just clipping! Faf du Plessis has to go. It's one of those that some batsman will feel unfortunate to be given out but bowlers will say good decision.

Chris Woakes has his first wicket and it's the South Africa captain.

Charlie Rhodes: I’d be a fan of bringing back grass banks to British cricket grounds. It will get muddy, but that never bothered anyone on Henman Hill!

Ed: Urgh, astroturf sounds horrible. Might get carpet burns.

There's a right party going on in one of the stands below the commentary box. Lots of singing and swaying from side to side from the locals. I saw one or two criticising the turnout for the game yesterday but today's crowd is good. The Wanderers really is one of the great Test crowds.
