Ooof. Root survives - just - as an inside edge off Pretorius scuttles past his stumps. The England captain is still limping a little, tenderly prodding his inside knee.

Meanwhile, Mark Wood does his best Root impression with a wonderful late cut for four, followed by a far less convincing slice over the slips. 15 off the over for England. That'll do nicely.

Twice now Root has attempted a ramp shot. And twice he has failed. But this time he scrambles through for a single as the ball ricochets off his knee.

Mark Wood makes room, he swings wildly, the ball goes high and towards third man but Faf Du Plessis, running towards the boundary from slip, can't make it. There's only one way Wood's going to play.

    Eng lead by 426 runs

Hendricks, making his Test debut at the age of 29, now has four wickets in this innings. Both he and Nortje have bowled some good spells today.

Dwayne Pretorius has the joy of bowling to Mark Wood, who thighs a length delivery for a leg-bye.

Root has watched his teammates come and go, but is still there unbeaten 41. How close are we to the declaration?

All England are doing is paving the way for messrs Wood and Broad to put South Africa to the sword at the end of the day.

Woakes comes and goes. Facing just his second ball, he inside edges Hendricks and De Kock does the rest behind the stumps.

You know what this means, Mark Wood is next.

He has played some good shots, but he was deceived by a slower bouncer. He got right underneath it. I like the look of Hendricks - he has worked hard for South Africa.

If you bowl short to Curran today, he's going to go for it. But it's one big shot too many, as he looks to hook Hendricks but finds height and not enough distance.

I love a ground where you can instantly recognise where it is from the uniqueness of the stands. At the Wanderers we have the iconic Open East Stand situated under the giant TV screen. It’s a large green structure where spectators sit on fairly basic wooden benches with no cover. But what you lose in comfort, you make up for in atmosphere as this is usually very much the party stand where the band plays all day and the chanting is raucous.

Eng 206-6 (lead SA by 422 runs)

Curran pushes Pretorius to point to bring up England's 200. He then jigs down the wicket and swats it down to long-on for four.

The lead is now 422. No matter when this innings ends, it will be Test-record run-chase for South Africa. The highest ever scored chased down is West Indies' 418 against Australia in 2003.

This is a funny innings from Root - he has faced 72 balls for his 36. Generally he has been playing his own steady Eddie way.

The luscious locks of Ryan Sidebottom. The name for his autobiography, perhaps.

Curran has his eye in. Much like he did in the previous Hendricks over, he hoicks the seamer over mid-on for four more.

Root spreads his legs and attempts a ramp shot but just misses out. It just feels as though South Africa will be sent in to bat before the day is out. There are 45 minutes left.

    Proper Nortje, that.

Is that the model with Snakes II?

Nope, I'm not having that one Marcus.

Anrich Nortje is replaced by Beuran Hendricks.

And Sam Curran greets him with a boundary first ball, a wide loosener which is just asking to be pulled into that gap at mid-on.

He is then up on his toes for a back-foot cover drive. Another four. And proof that Curran is a solid genuine all-rounder.

    The lead passes 400.
