Without a crowd it feels like the pressure is turned up even more on young Zak Crawley. There's no distractions for us TV viewers. All eyes are on him as Roach probes away.

Ordinarily, in a stadium full of people, you think the reviews are played on big screens for the benefit of the spectators. You forget that the the men in the middle are watching intently too.

Here, with the 15 players and officials in an empty ground watching a big screen, the instructions relayed feel more Big Brother than ever.

You also get more of an insight into how it feels for the batsman. Silence, tension, the negative decision, then sent on his way by whoops of the fielders.

  3. Eng 52-3published at 26 overs

    Crawley 0, Stokes 0

Gabriel goes in search of the stumps again first up to Stokes. The England all-rounder, sleeveless sweater on and collar turned up, is hit on the pad. There's another lbw appeal but this one was probably sneaking down.

This is a fine spell from Shannon Gabriel.

All three wickets have been hitting the stumps, either lbw or bowled. That's the blueprint. The challenge for the bowling unit is continue to do that. Short balls, yorkers and getting the ball down the channel are important. But you need to make sure to get 80% of the balls hitting the stumps.

England's stand-in captain Ben Stokes strides out to the middle with his side wobbling.

Two quick wickets. This was the first...

The umpire probably thought it was going down leg the way it shaped. He felt it was a little further down leg than it actually was. I thought that too at first but a very, very good review by Jason Holder and Shannon Gabriel.

Burns lbw Gabriel 30 (Eng 51-3)

No wonder the West Indies players like it. It's very out. Three reds and Rory Burns is on his way.

    Shannon Gabriel has all three.

No bat. I think I can hear the distant cheers of West Indies players as they watch on the big screen. They like this...

It was signalled a leg-bye which suggests there was no bat involved.

  10. West Indies reviewpublished at 11:40 British Summer Time 9 July 2020

Big lbw appeal from West Indies after a yorker from Gabriel.

The umpires says no but if Burns hasn't hit this is could be close.

My neighbour has decided now is a good moment for some very loud drilling of some sort. Not an ideal Test match-viewing ambience.

Apologies if I start to sound grumpy.

  12. Eng 49-2published at 25 overs

    Burns 28, Crawley 0

It looks like it'll be a battle for Crawley early on. Roach is on the money straight away and is nipping the ball around. Crawley leaves the final ball but it comes back to hit him on the body.

    It's not easy for England.

I was at Kent a couple of years ago. Obviously, my feet are big and Zak Crawley was on at me about getting some bigger shoes for him. I had no idea who he was and, from his profile I just thought he was a big, fast bowler.

I approached him with a pair of boots and was like "if you run in and it hurts your feet, just let me know" and he was like "no, no, no, I open the batting".

I think he was very disappointed at me not knowing who he was.

  14. Eng 49-2published at 24.3 overs

If Crawley makes a score here Denly will be under even more pressure with Joe Root to return for the second Test. Denly never looks overawed but keeps failing to nail down his place.

    Kemar Roach is on.

Jamo: Joe Denly... out for 18... but it’s OK he sees off 58 balls. Might as well have stuck with the younger James Vince if we’re happy with 18 runs from number three.

  16. Eng 49-2published at 24 overs

    Burns 28, Crawley 0

That was a beautiful delivery from Gabriel. Fast and accurate with the skill to get the ball to move off the pitch.

Crawley has a short leg for company with the West Indies quick bowling up over 90mph.

Crawley is used to coming in when the ball is new and the bowlers are fresh as he opens for Kent. So nothing here he isn't accustomed to.

Here's Zak Crawley, usually an opener, at number four. It's the 22-year-old's first Test in England.

No better sight for the fast bowler there, bails flying everywhere. It skipped off the pitch and done him for pace. Denly just didn't quite close the gate.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 23.2 overs

    Denly b Gabriel 18 (Eng 48-2)

    Stumps splattered.

Its double figures and out for Joe Denly again. He gets a good delivery from Shannon Gabriel, similar to the one that got Dom Sibley yesterday.

It zips back, sneaks through the defences and sends the stumps all over the shop.
