England’s bowlers took great enjoyment in performing some impersonations during the warm-up. Not all of them were instantly obvious, but Ben Stokes' Mitchell Johnson was impossible to miss. Limbs all over the place, left-arm. He even bowled a wild wide, but I'm not sure that was intentional...

  2. Eng 35-1published at 18.2 overs

West Indies skipper Jason Holder is starting off from the other end. Rory Burns is on strike for the first time this morning. He's on 999 Test runs.

That was a really quick bouncer - Denly was in no position to play that at all. That will make him think twice about playing the hook shot again.

  4. Eng 35-1published at 18 overs

    Hello!

After a loosener first up, Joseph fires down a tasty bouncer to Joe Denly. Denly tries to take it on but doesn't get close to it. Joseph's expression seems to be an almost constant snarl and this is no different.

Did you ever think you'd see cricket like this? Floodlights, no people and everything else. It sums up this unsettling and strange summer that everyone has experienced.

  6. Eng 35-1published at 17.4 overs

    Burns 20, Denly 14

I think I might be washing my hair when that gets played. Could be painful.

Alzarri Joseph will start proceedings with two balls of his over from last night to finish.

Now we've got 'Jerusalem' playing out. It's kind of reassuring to hear that. Get used to this because it will be different at Old Trafford; members of the TMS team will sing at least a line, solo, of 'Jerusalem' and 'Rally around the West Indies'.

  8. Postpublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 9 July 2020

There may be no-one in the ground but 'Jerusalem' is ringing around the stands at Southampton over the PA system. Here come the players...

We've had the rain. The next thing to tick off on the cricket bingo card would be an England collapse.

Bowling is definitely West Indies' strong point. I don't think they were quite at their best yesterday.

Charlie: Why oh why are they not starting at 10am to make up for some of the lost time yesterday? Cricket frustrates me so much with the 11am starts.

Reg Cotterill: I'm sensing 81-7 at lunch. West Indies pace attack looks good.

  11. 'It was nice to be supported'published at 10:53 British Summer Time 9 July 2020

England bowler Jofra Archer, speaking to Sky Sports, on both teams taking a knee before play yesterday: "It was nice to be supported. This year has been an eye-opener not just to a lot of people in the black community but to everyone else.

"We live in a time where everything is being recorded and a lot of people might not know that was happening up until this year. Any support on the matters that are going on are much appreciated."

Another big hour for the West Indies. I was speaking to one of the boys last night and they were hoping for weather like this so the ball can talk and move for the first hour, like it did for the first two overs yesterday.

It's one of those days where as a bowler you feel like you should be getting wickets and the ball should be swinging.

Joel: Simple cricket maths: Steve Smith+Alastair Cook = Rory Burns.

Deep down England fans might not have minded the interruptions yesterday.

They were horrible conditions for batting and when Dom Sibley was out in the second over you could be forgiven for thinking 'here we go again...'

Credit to Rory Burns and Joe Denly for reaching 35-1. It could have been much worse.

It's dry but not exactly bright in Southampton. The foodlights are on, and you wonder whether we'd start on time if they weren't. As it is, the players have been out warming up and, bar the hovercover on the track, there's nothing to say play won't get under way at 11:00. Keep an eye on the sky, though.

The players are out warming up at the Ageas Bowl. It seems we'll get started on time.

    To the all-important forecast...

It isn't perfect but it looks like we'll get much more play today. The day will be extended to make up for the lost time on day one.
