Paul B: I genuinely have no idea how Rory Burns still has functioning joints in his body. His batting stance looks so uncomfortable, I wouldn't fancy standing like that on a damp bit of grass for half the day
Burns 28, Denly 14
Better from Holder. He is finding a hint of movement and almost squeezes one back onto Rory Burns' pad.
Burns is unperturbed. A bob of the knee and a twitch of the neck only adding to his Pirates of the Caribbean vibe.
We're back, ladies and gents. 22.2 overs into the Test and the bowlers are trying to change the ball.

The West Indies batsman just not making the England batsmen play enough. There are no alarms. Just ticking along nicely.
It has been a quiet start before even taking into account the lack of crowd. Just the one boundary so far and it was a little edgy...

Burns is doing some gardening, it's often a sign that the batsman isn't happy. He's targeting the spot where the ball landed. There might be a little dry bit or something.
The fiery Gabriel thumps one into Rory Burns' back thigh. I hope the England opener is wearing a thigh pad because if not that'll bruise.
Gabriel looks the more threatening with his lively pace. Burns skews another at the end of the over.

I think the West Indies started nicely yesterday but went for this ploy of bowling outside off-stump and it's not threatening that. Just a nice line and length but the batsman can leave and get into their work.
As if to back-up Aggers' point, a graphic has just popped up on the TV coverage that shows only three of Holder's deliveries in the match would have gone on to hit the stumps.

Holder isn't bowling full enough. It looks nice but it's wide and not full enough to encourage Denly to come forward.
Run rate 1.95
With just a quiet hum added to the TV pictures, you can hear the yelps and groans of the slip cordon. There's a loud cry when Denly leaves one from Holder that bounces over his off stump.
A maiden from Holder but not too threatening.
Fair enough, Joel.

Joel: Just to clarify (see 10:46 BST entry), I was suggesting Burns has the eccentricities of Smith but with the longevity and grit of Cook.
Burns 25, Denly 14
Nicely done, Seb. I fully expect work Zoom calls to be interrupted by cheers throughout the day today. Pictures of your working-from-home cricket-watching set-ups are always welcome.
Readers of these pages over the winter will know I'm a fan of a big, grumpy fast bowler. Think South Africa's Anrich Nortje. Shannon Gabriel is another in that mould.

Seb Egan: Just given Rory Burns a standing ovation mid meeting for his 1000 test runs scored.
Oooo, well bowled.
West Indies were a little short yesterday but Gabriel's length is right up straight away this morning. Burns is tentative to the extra pace and he slices the ball away through point. It trickles for four but I'm not sure Burns aimed there.
Joseph's opening spell lasts just the two balls. Shannon Gabriel is on.

That is Rory Burns' 1,000th run in Test cricket. Normally you'd get a lot of applause for that, it's up on the big screen. But all you get here is that hum.
Burns 21, Denly 14
He bowls to the left, etc, etc.
It's a cautious start from Burns, leaning forward and defending to Holder for most of the over before he tucks one off his hip to bring up his 1,000th Test run.
