Lead by 6
England with a chance of a run-out? Maybe.
Jofra Archer has Shane Dowrich on his toes with a length delivery, as the West Indies batsman pushes into the off side and sets off for a quick single. Rory Burns picks it up one-handed and aims at the stumps with a forward-diving throw at the striker's end.
Would have been tight, very tight. Roston Chase survives.

Jack Mendel: I know it may all change in the second innings, but so far, Holder got 6-fer, and Wood and Archer have got nothing. It certainly seems like England made the wrong choice in terms of team make up. It's a good pitch which helps accurate seam bowlers.

Ben Stokes has done well. He will have talked with Chris Silverwood, addressed the team at lunch and gone back to an old-school method.
When you have two bowlers who bowl 90mph, it can't be that the only way they bowl is to whack it into the pitch.
Still plenty of time left in the day in Southampton.
It's mission 'increase the lead' now for Roston Chase and Shane Dowrich as they see off a Ben Stokes maiden.

Dominic Bess has had a really good game so far. He just looks like an energised cricketer you want to have in your team.
England 204
I binge-watched 'The Test: A New Era for Australia's Team' last week. Late to the party, I know. But Nathan Lyon did come across like a decent chap. Also, has there ever been better television than Justin Langer kicking over a bin during THAT Headingley Test?
West Indies move into a one-run lead as Archer completes an uneventful over.

Dom Bess looks to be a very similar bowler to Nathan Lyon, nothing too flashy but good control and skill level. I just hope that Bess can catch better than we saw from Lyon last August!
Sam
This will be a very intriguing passage of play before the tea break.
West Indies go level with England's first-innings score as Dowrich hooks Ben Stokes for a single to the deep and Chase pushes into the leg side for one more.

With Holder to come, West Indies should be aiming for a lead of at least 70.
I wonder if West Indies are going to try to capitalise on the 15 overs before the new ball, looking at how Dowrich has come out.
I don't think they should. I think they should just continue to bat.

Archer continues after drinks. The economy rate in that first bit of the afternoon session was 2.13 runs per over compared to close to four in the morning, confirming Michael Vaughan's earlier analysis.
Archer mixes his pace and is unlucky when a bouncer flicks Chase's back, loops over Jos Buttler and runs for four leg-byes.
You can get more of this type of thing from Mr Vaughan by watching Today at the Test - on BBC Two and on this very website at 19:00 BST.

Hugo Flaxman: Bess has the potential to be a very good Test match bowler for England. He isn't afraid to keep putting it right up there to the batsman & rarely loses control. He'll develop craft, guile, variety as he goes on, but the one thing you must have is control.
Benjamin Andrew Stokes brings himself on and gives Dom Bess a well-deserved rest.
Just two from the over. Stokes took that all-important wicket of Kraigg Brathwaite earlier today. Let's take another look at it while the players have a drinks break...

England have been so much better in afternoon. The Anderson and Bess combination worked well. It has been old-school, disciplined bowling of bowling dots and creating chances.
England have gone for the control mechanism to just try and force the error.
It looks like England have had a good chat at lunch. Archer and Wood, in the first session, 53% of their bowling was short.
Chase 16, Dowrich 10
Roston Chase has 16 from 61 deliveries and is looking slightly fragile as he's completely squared up by Jofra Archer. The ball balloons up towards gully and falls safe.
Lucky boy.

Reverend Leroy: I haven't seen someone as intent as Shane Dowrich, on wiping out a defecit as fast as possible, since Bill Clinton.
Trail by 8 runs
Shane Dowrich takes a few steps and drills Dom Bess for two boundaries, one over mid-on and the other through mid-off.
Dear Mr Blackwood,
That's how you advance down the wicket.
Regards,
Mr Dowrich.

Jack Gilbert: Now we've got a ball game.
Jofra Archer replaces James Anderson as tucks up Chase with good line and length.
We've definitely got a game on now.
