This morning I was strolling across the car park, on the way for a trot around the golf course. I wasn't really paying attention, messing about with my phone. I almost stepped into the path of a big, red car, driven by match referee Chris Broad. Risking a demerit point...

Oh, Danny. What a way to introduce yourself.

The West Indies bowlers are taking a little while to warm up but their fielding is on point early. Shamarh Brooks with a diving stop that prevents Archer getting an early boundary.

A lad I work with (morning Danny!) played his first game for my team yesterday and had been going on about how great a bowler and fielder he is. He put down a caught and bowled and two other catches and had figures of 3-0-29-0. He was quiet afterwards.

Shannon Gabriel will unsurprisingly begin proceedings from the other end.

He dealt some crucial blows last night...

England haven't really seen the true potential of Jofra Archer as a batsman.

WinViz has West Indies at 51% favourites, England at 40% and the draw at 9%. That's about right for me.

Mark Wood prods forward comfortably to the rest of Joseph's over. That's good for now but England need this pitch to break up if they're going to defend this total.

Every run is important. You can imagine what the crowd would have been like, cheering every single.

A leg-bye off Mark Wood's thigh pad to start for England. Every little helps.

Is there anything that man can't do?!

I'm slightly surprised to see it'll be Alzarri Joseph starting off this morning, although he did bowl very well last night.

I can confirm that Alastair Cook's first attempt at organising the TMS Curry Club was a total success.

Clearly, he's had leadership experience, but this was a responsibility no-one is ever really ready for. His research was thorough, his order-taking detailed and hospitality welcoming.

Anyone who has ever organised a big takeaway order will know the pressure that comes with it. When Sir Chef walked into the bar carrying bags laden with curry, I think he was even more proud than that final ton at The Oval.

Anyone else singing along to this final rendition of Jerusalem under their breath?

Coming into the fifth day, losing the toss, this is a very good position to be in for West Indies.

With England, everyone thinks you are behind the eight ball but it just takes something special from one or two players.

I would definitely prefer to be in West Indies' shoes but I hope they're not too confident as this game is still in balance.

  16. 'Just not good enough' - Vaughan on Denlypublished at 10:53 British Summer Time 12 July 2020

Back to yesterday for a moment. What of Joe Denly?

Once again he made a start before cheaply giving his wicket away.

With Joe Root to come back for the second Test, and Zak Crawley impressing, was that Denly's final innings for England?

Michael Vaughan says it is time for England to move on.

"Joe Denly played the way he has played in all of his 15 Tests," said Vaughan. "It's been the same story. He did the hard yards then made a mistake."

"He has missed his chance and they have to stick with Crawley. I'm sorry for Denly - he's just not good enough."

Jofra has been having some throw-downs this morning.

I spoke to Sussex's director of cricket about Archer a couple of years ago, long before his England debut, and he told me Archer fancies himself as a number six in Tests.

We haven't seen a telling innings from him yet in an international shirt. England would love just a 30 today.

I think West Indies will have taken this situation on day one. They have an opportunity to win this Test. If they win this, it will be a brilliant chase, that wicket is not easy.

All results possible. I wouldn't like to offer a thought on who will win this game. But I do think we will have a winner.
