There have been eight previous occasions when teams have won the toss and chosen to field in Tests at Old Trafford. Not once has it resulted in victory, albeit a lot were rain-affected draws.

There is a big gap on one side of the ground where that huge temporary stand would normally be. Obviously there is no need for it in this match.

It does mean that what looks like an office block has an excellent view of the cricket.

He got a few early sighters but now England opener Dom Sibley has to prod forward with his bat and defend. Gabriel has adjusted his radar that was still aiming towards Southampton at the start of the over.

That's missed the sightscreen! That was Harmison-esque. Incredible. A very strange over.

Blimey, Shannon! He's taking some time to get going here. A horror delivery a mile down the leg side for five wides.

After the longest morning, it's good to finally get the cricket under way.

Whether it's Archer-related, or the energy of a new venue, it feels like even more attention is being paid to the bio-secure protocols. Constant reminders about face masks, rubber gloves required when at the breakfast buffet, screens around each seating position in the broadcast box.

Shannon Gabriel, who I hope has had a massage or two since his man-of-the-match showing at Southampton, will share the new ball.

He loses his run-up first up and has to abort. His second attempt isn't much better, stuttery and stiff.

That swung and seamed. It was like a leg-break.

That was a beautiful ball. That's where Roach just has to plug away.

After a loose ball early, Kemar Roach finds his range like we know he can. A lovely ball to Rory Burns that moves away and has the slips groaning.

That's just an idea of how tricky this opening period could be for England.

It felt quite clammy outside, which is always nice for a bit of swing bowling.

    Now we're ready for play.

Kemar Roach has the ball in hand. Jason Holder and the other slip fielders are well wrapped up in jumpers.

It's gloomy and clearly a bit chilly.

The players are out on the field and all of the support staff have emerged on the boundary edge.

Once again before the first ball is bowled everyone involved takes a knee in a stance against racism.

    Powerful. Well played.

Teams batting first here tend to get 350 and beyond. It's a high scoring ground.

Are you all settled in? Where are you following from? The 'home office' which becomes the designated cricket room for the next five days?
