Not the start the West Indies would have wanted but put away nicely by Rory Burns.

It now feels like a nice batting afternoon with the sun shining.

    Jason Holder will HATE this.

A loosener first up and Rory Burns cuts it to the fence.

Jason Holder, who has figures of 0-7 from his seven overs, will get us going after lunch.

    Rory Burns is on strike.

The players are making their way back out to the middle.

I can't help but feel this is a crucial session in this Test and the series.

If England get through it unscatched they should be on top and have a platform to post a big first-innings score.

Remember when there was chat around Joe Root potentially being the best batter in the world? Not just among the best, THE best.

It feels like he's no longer even part of that conversation.

Oh how captaincy weighs on some talents. Joe Root seems to have had his identity eroded since he burst on the scene. Definitely not the Root of old. He seems blunted by captaincy over the last 18 months.

Sky are currently analysing Jos Buttler's Test career and technique.

Based on a recent team selector we did more than 50% of our readers wanted him to be replaced by Ben Foakes anyway but is this Test his last chance?

We're not the only cricket in town today.

The County sides are continuing to ramp up their work ahead of their season starting next Friday.

At Headingley Yorkshire are 101-0 against arch-enemies Lancashire.

You can listen to that one here.

Andrew Strauss has just called the run out of Joe Root a disaster.

With only six recognised batsman in the England side and with Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler not exactly pulling up trees so far in this series you can see where he's coming from.

GC Cricket: On paper, that was an acceptable enough session for England after being put in (despite Root's run-out being extremely frustrating). But with the line-up we've picked, I can't help but think we needed a better start as things may go downhill quickly

Perhaps the biggest question is can Shannon Gabriel make it through this Test?

He looked absolutely shot after the second Test, which only finished on Monday don't forget.

He's already been off the field once today, after struggling with his run-up in his fourth over. He's since come back and bowled another four overs so hopefully for West Indies' sake it was just a twinge rather than anything more serious.

We finally got the moment that everyone has wanted in this series - a look at West Indies off-spinner Rakheem Cornwall.

Weighing in at just shy of 22 stone the 27-year-old has found some spin out of the Old Trafford pitch.

Is that the moisture in the pitch like day one last week or have we got a turner on our hands?

Ben Stokes came in and looked his usual unflappable self.

Is there anyone in world cricket who plays a better straight drive?

  14. Postpublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 24 July 2020

Rory Burns has been everything you expect to him to be so far today.

It's never pretty, you never feel like he's fully in but he's played a couple of lovely shots and most importantly for England - especially with the weakened batting line-up in this Test - he's still there on 33 at lunch.

He's got to convert it and go big if England are going to post a decent first-innings total you'd think.

England skipper Joe Root is batting at three in this Test with the hosts having to play an extra seamer with some doubts over Ben Stokes' fitness to bowl.

He survived an early lbw appeal and was just starting to score more freely when he was run out by Roston Chase's direct hit.

Was there a run there? Was Root to slow to set off? Where has his dive? A lot of questions to answer.

West Indies got just the start they wanted and needed having put England in to bat first at Old Trafford.

Having faced 372 balls in the first innings last week, Dom Sibley lasted just five today as Kemar Roach trapped him plumb infront.

    Cakes

#redforruth everywhere, even the cakes. You might have seen the England players wearing red caps this morning. One that has been signed by the entire England XI is being auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the Ruth Strauss Foundation.

Sky are currently playing a very powerful film about the Ruth Strauss Foundation.

A reminder for those that are just joining us that Old Trafford has turned red today (well, even more red than usual) in honour of the wife of England great Sir Andrew Strauss, who sadly lost her battle with lung cancer in December 2018.

That was a good morning of Test match cricket.

Too often in Tests we don't get an equal contest between bat and ball but on the whole this series has been a brilliant battle.

Will West Indies be happy with that first session after putting England in though? They've got two wickets, but with a run out in the mix I think they'll be disappointed to have only taken one wicket via their bowling.
