  1. WI 41-2published at 12.4 overs

Lovely stroke from Shai Hope as he gets forward and cracks it away through the covers for four.

You see him play those shots and it feels utterly bewildering his Test record isn't miles better.

James Anderson has looked more dangerous, he's beat the bat more often. That was close to the bat and the wickets. That is an encouraging sign for England because it misbehaved a bit.

  3. WI 37-2published at 12.2 overs

James Anderson finds the corridor of uncertainty and beats Shai Hope's outside edge.

It's one of those grim days in the field with no crowd and no atmosphere.

  5. WI 35-2published at 12 overs

And Brathwaite blocks out all three.

Stuart Broad has three balls left in the over.

    Kraigg Brathwaite on strike.

    Here we go...

Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer make their way back down from the dressing room together, each carrying a cup of coffee.

Or tea. I don't have their hot drink preferences to hand.

Kraigg Brathwaite and Shai Hope are also making their way back to the middle now.

    No overs have been lost.

Controversial I know but if I was Root I would take Broad off for a few overs after this rain delay. Put some fire in that belly. Has worked so far this series!

It may rain a lot in Manchester but it's also often very windy.

And that's a good thing here - that shower has blown through like a Jofra Archer bouncer.

The covers are being packed up and the drying rope is being dragged around the outfield.

Play should be back under way before long.

Before the onslaught of northern rain clichés....remember the umpires took time out of the game with a questionable base line for light on day one. The delicate hues of a Lancastrian early evening are part of summer's majesty.

The England players are hanging around under umbrellas by the side of the boundary instead of going all the way back to the dressing room.

He's been beaten by a James Anderson beauty but Shai Hope has otherwise made a promising start to day five.

I was up really early this morning, 6am, and the groundstaff were all out there. They'd got all the covers off already. I don't know what time they start but they are doing a remarkable job.

It's going to be one of those days. There's blue sky where the rain is coming from.

Ah. It's just got heavy enough for the umpires to call a halt to proceedings.

Stuart Broad won't mind too much - he's concerned about the seam of the ball getting out of shape in the wet.

I just get the feeling that Stuart Broad is searching a little bit, he is hunting for that wicket.

  18. WI 35-2published at 11.3 overs

That won't improve Stuart Broad's mood or the condition of the ball.

On the pads and Kraigg Brathwaite clips it deliciously through mid-wicket for four all along a slightly wet surface.

Few spots of rain falling now.

    The groundstaff are getting ready.

    Hopefully it passes quickly.

There's a nasty cloud coming from the left. It's very blustery, though, so you'd think whatever does come will blow over pretty quickly.
