Ben Stokes went in front of Joe Root at first slip and then dropped it. James Anderson has his back to the slip cordon. My initial reaction there was that was Root's catch and Stokes went across him.

    Pak 12-1

Missed opportunity for England! And Ben Stokes shows he is human. Anderson finds the outside edge of Abid Ali's bat, the ball is travelling to Joe Root at first slip but Stokes dives in front and spills it. Should have been taken.

Jock: There needs to be more positivity around Buttler. Nice catch down leg there... he’s just saved England from a Masood ton!

  4. Pak 12-1published at 6.1 overs

The first boundary for Pakistan and it's slightly streaky.

Abid Ali slashes at James Anderson, the ball goes aerial and through the gully region for four. Not convincing but they all count.

On that note, Root is back on the field with a bit of tape on his thumb. He looks fine.

On the subject of Joe Root thumb injuries, this story, from when he did the same thing in 2014, is worth a read for a window into English cricket's past. Root as a frontline bowler in T20s (perhaps he thinks he is in Test cricket, judging by yesterday) and Stuart Broad as captain...

Broad's knees: YES, STUART BROAD'S KNEES ARE PUMPING

  8. Pak 8-1published at 6 overs

Azhar Ali 0, Abid Ali 3

Stunning ball from Stuart Broad. Hitting the seam, on a length and the ball zips away, whizzing past the dangling bat of Azhar Ali.

And again, another beauty as Azhar plays inside the line. He's still in search for his first runs of the match.

Abid Ali is being deliberately compact. He's determined to get his hands over the ball.

    Pakistan lead by 115 runs

Just under 10 minutes until tea as James Anderson has Abid Ali fishing at one outside off.

Pakistan happy to leave and defend out the rest of the over as they try and make it through the interval without losing another wicket.

Yasir Shah and the spinners will take the plaudits for that bowling performance. But how good was Mohammad Abbas for Pakistan earlier today? Here is Isa Guha's analysis on Abbas...

Pakistan have got themselves into a strong position, but it's not impregnable yet.

A maiden from Broad. Azhar remains on a pair.

I had gotten so accustomed to the noisy Pakistan fielders that it's now eerily quiet with the less vocal England team.

Also, I've just noticed that both batsmen here have the initials AA. That's blown my mind for some reason. It's a double AA.

Stuart Broad has taken a wicket in his first over in four of the last six innings at Emirates Old Trafford.

  14. ouch!

    Pak 8-1published at 3.3 overs

Azhar edges Stuart Broad towards the slips, the ball bounces short of Joe Root and hits the England captain on the thumb. He looks in a bit of pain and jogs off the field for treatment. Zak Crawley comes on as sub.

This is how Azhar fell in the first innings...

  16. Pak 8-1published at 3 overs

    Azhar 0, Abid 3

I stand corrected, it's Abid Ali on strike after Shan Masood was dismissed on final ball of Broad's over.

And Abid clips Anderson to mid-wicket for two runs from the over.

Pakistan captain Azhar Ali the new man in. He's on a pair and has to face England's all-time leading wicket-taker, James Anderson, with the new ball, in home conditions.

Shan Masood is the first player to score 150 and then a duck in a Test in England.
