When Jos Buttler bats for an hour and only scores three runs, and Ollie Pope bats for an hour and only scores six runs, that tells you a lot about the hour.

    Shot!

Jos Buttler frees his arms and drives another lovely four through cover.

How England have survived that first hour I'll never know. Pakistan have been outstanding. If Pope and Buttler are still there after lunch then it's time to cash in.

Just nine runs from the last eight overs. In fact, Mohammad Abbas has bowed six maidens this morning!

A refreshed Naseem Shah will resume.

The umpire has just said to Abbas that this is his last friendly warning for running on the pitch.

It takes a bit of bottle for the wicketkeeper to stand up to the stumps when your opening bowler is bowling at 80mph.

    Pope 52, Buttler 18

Mohammad Rizwan has come up to the stumps for Mohammad Abbas, and he almost gets an edge first up as Ollie Pope goes groping outside off stump once again.

Pope is all at sea as another beauty keeps low and scuttles past the outside edge, smacking into Rizwan's gloves. It is not easy out there.

Edward Laslett: Surely it’s better that Buttler tries to start hitting a few and gets out on 50/60 in 20 minutes rather than continue looking like a walking wicket and heads to the pavilion in an hour on 25.

Naseem has started well, it's not like the ball is moving a lot but he's beaten the outside of the bat a few times.

  12. Eng 111-4published at 41 overs

This latest delivery from Naseem Shah jags back and Mohammad Rizwan pulls off a good tumbling stop.

Meanwhile, outside the ground, a few Pakistan fans are stood at the tram stop, playing a drum and blowing a trumpet. They can't get in but, if you're at the tram stop, you can see the big screen...

Mike Bell: Bringing Jos Buttler back to Test cricket was a good piece of thinking 'outside the box', and initially it worked. He has a vast array of shots. But flashing loosely at balls outside off stump at 100-4 in a Test shows it's time to put the plan back in the box.

    Pope 51, Buttler 18

A clumping drive from Jos Buttler lands short of the advancing fielder at mid-on, before a loose leg-side delivery from Mohammad Abbas absolutely flies away for four byes.

Since Jos Buttler has come back into the side, he has tried to play the responsible Test match innings which is something he is still trying to learn.

  16. Eng 106-4published at 39 overs

The Pakistan fielders call Naseem Shah 'Lille Shah' because of his resemblance to the Aussie great when he bowls.

He's pinging these through at a pace Lille would be proud of. An uneasy maiden for Pope.

  17. Eng 106-4published at 38.3 overs

Pace from Naseem Shah, this latest delivery zipping past a speculative poke from Ollie Pope.

Pope's squared up by another delivery, Naseem's hands aloft as he watches the ball bobble towards mid-off, before another ripper beats Pope as he goes driving once again...

Waqar Younis is wearing the daylights out of a pair of sunglasses in the stands.

I met Waqar last year for the first time during the two-day World Cup semi-final at Old Trafford. He let me cut in front of him in the queue for pies and cake. I promptly nicked the last piece of chocolate dessert and then felt bad. And that's my best meeting-a-cricketer-in-a-mundane-setting story.

Jos Buttler is beaten by an absolute beaut from Mohamamd Abbas. It holds its line just enough to zip past the outside edge as Buttler pokes tentatively forward.

Something's just starting to happen for Pakistan...
