Sam Rosser: Is Ollie Pope further proof that with the obvious Stokes / Kholi type exceptions, Test and limited-overs cricket are essentially different sports. And therefore that should be accepted, with players coached appropriately in order to flourish consistently?

Ollie Pope ends the over with a loose, wafty drive at Naseem Shah.

I thought Buttler had gone there because there was quite a bit of force in the short.

  4. Eng 106-4published at 36.5 overs

Oh, Jos Buttler! He has a wild flay at Naseem's third ball, no real foot movement, and he is so fortunate that it bounces just in front of first slip. If that slip had been a couple of steps further forward...

Buttler readjusts and finally gets his first runs of the day with a stonking drive through cover that stops just before the boundary. That should do his confidence some good.

Buttler needs to do something soon. He's almost like a voyeur here. He's trying to work out how best to play.

A change - Naseem Shah will replace Shaheen Afridi.

I wonder how Jos Buttler might play Mohammad Abbas if this was a limited-overs game, with coloured clothes and a white ball. My guess is he'd be landing it in the pavilion.

  8. Eng 103-4published at 36 overs

Ollie Pope gets a look at Mohammad Abbas for a bit and, sensibly, defends his way through a maiden.

Not for the first time, Ollie is trying to hit the left-arm swing bowler into extra cover, which is not easy to do. It's high risk.

    Pope 51, Buttler 15

Yeah, let's not do that, Ollie.

The England man goes for a huge, gallumphing drive outside off stump, down on one knee, eyeing a tasty four through cover, and he just about avoids edging the ball onto his stumps. Pope gives himself a firm rebuke as he watches the ball dribble just past the danger area.

Ian Merrick: If we are purring over Pakistan's choice of a left-arm bowler, right-arm bowler and wrist-spinner, we have our own in Sam Curran and Adil Rashid. If it's such a nightmare to face we could easily do it as well?

The problem for the England tail will be left-arm pace, right-arm pace and wrist spin. That's a nightmare concoction.

Mohammad Abbas starts wide of the crease and swings the ball back in, past Jos Buttler and over the top of the stumps, all the way into Rizwan's gloves.

He's getting it to move around plenty. Jos Buttler has yet to score a run this morning.

That wobbly seam is mesmerising to watch. Then it swings when it goes past the stumps and away from the wicketkeeper. Always a tough one to hold on to.

  16. Eng 102-4published at 33.2 overs

Fortune for Jos Buttler! Mohammad Abbas finds his outside edge, no foot movement from Buttler as he plays a half-hearted defensive shot, and it goes on the bounce to second slip.

The next delivery rattles the outside edge once again, a bit of late movement surprising everyone, including Mohammad Rizwan behind the stumps. The ball swings through his gloves and whips away for four byes.

Has the Shaheen gone off the new ball?

    Mike Bristow, Barnes

  18. Eng 98-4published at 33 overs

Another sharp inswinger from Shaheen, but it's a no ball, and Ollie Pope has connected with it this time, albeit straight to the fielder at cover.

Shaheen overpitches, and he's clipped very tidily off the pads by Ollie Pope to bring up an excellent half-century.

He has really grafted after coming in while England were mid-collapse. Very, very mature.

That is incredibly, incredibly fortunate. Maybe this will be Pope's day.
