    And we're going off.

Joe Root is having a word with umpire Richard Kettleborough. He looks quite calm but he's obviously frustrated.

  3. Pak 124-5published at 45 overs

Mohammad Rizwan gets off the mark with a crisp on-drive for three.

The bad news? It's started spitting again. The umpires are having a chat and the groundstaff are congregating on the boundary edge.

Pakistan picked 28 specialist batsmen since Alam last played for them in 2009. He missed 88 Tests, the seventh most by any player between appearances for the same team.

England's Gareth Batty holds the record with 142 missed Tests between 2005 and 2016.

  6. Pak 120-5published at 44 overs

That was just only pitching inline. The two seams were inline with the left-side of the ball not inline.

England have taken three wickets for 18 runs in just 6.1 overs now.

The ball before that, I said he would have trouble facing the ball coming back in.

Fawad Alam has waited a long time for that - and it was very brief.

Alam lbw Woakes 0 (Pak 120-5)

That is a fantastic review from Joe Root and England!

It's pitching inline and it's hitting the top of middle stump. Fawad Alam's stay after an 11-year wait is a very short one.

England are well and truly on top here.

  10. England reviewpublished at 43.4 overs

Hmmm, England are going to see if they've got Fawad Alam trapped lbw here.

My initial thoughts were it was pitching outside leg stump but Joe Root and Rory Burns decide 'why not?'

There were stunned gasps of amazement in the TMS box when Fawad Alam faced up to that first ball in his remarkable stance.

What on earth is this stance? You didn't tell me about this...

  13. Pak 117-4published at 43 overs

Fawad Alam has quite possibly THE weirdest technique or stance I've seen. He stands completely square on, chest facing the bowler, with his stumps on show before turning shoulder on while the bowling is in his delivery stride.

He's scored a lot of runs in domestic cricket with this technique but can he succeed with it at Test level?

You just get the feeling here that England could pick up two or three quickly.

Fawad Alam, who hasn't played Test cricket for 11 years, is the new batsman.

This is a real opening for England now.

  17. wicket

    Shafiq c Sibley b Broad 5 (Pak 117-4)

    England are on top!

After playing an absolutely gorgeous flick through mid-wicket Asad Shafiq is neither forward or back and Stuart Broad draws the edge. Dom Sibley, who shelled one earlier don't forget, takes a good low catch. The England opener rolls his eyes back in relief.

  18. Pak 113-3published at 42 overs

Good over for Pakistan as Sam Curran's line is a bit leg-side-ish and Babar Azam and Asad Shafiq are able to play through the on side.

Small Man Peaky: Curran must be up there with Woakes for most underrated England player. Always gets wickets at crucial points in matches. Gun fielder. Tends to get handy runs down the order. Seems to have a real fight and energy about him.

  20. Pak 106-3published at 41 overs

    Babar 17, Asad 0

Offt that is an absolute beauty from Stuart Broad! It pitches in line with the stumps and then jags away past the outside edge of Babar Azam. Almost unplayable.

Babar picks up a couple more off his hips. That's a strong area for him.
