  2. 'Pakistan showed a huge amount of skill'published at 18:44 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

After the disappointment of Manchester I expected England to blow Pakistan away here. When I saw the ball moving as it did on day one I thought if Pakistan get beyond 150 I'd be surprised, but they showed a huge amount of skill.

Abid Ali played beautifully, Babar Azam is a class act and Mohammad Rizwan is a firecracker. He's the kind of cricketer I'd love to have in my team. I didn't think he could play that innings.

SB78: They should have agreed to play a beer match - one innings each, reverse the batting order, only batsmen can bowl.

It would be sensible to bring the start times forward. The game clearly needs to find a colour ball that will work in all conditions.

I know this week has been very different but let's be honest, for a long time now in Test cricket, the light has been taken too soon. We've talked pretty much about it in every Test this summer.

  5. 'We'll be looking to win the third Test'published at 18:40 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

Joe Root talking to TMS about England's team for the third Test: "We’ll have to see where we’re at in the next couple of days and thankfully, as we have all summer, we’ve got fantastic options available to us.

"We can look at the surface and see if it looks any different to this one and see if there’s a balance of attack we really fancy on any given pitch. We’ll go into every game looking to win it and trying to win the series 2-0. It’s nice to be in position going into the final game."

    Andy Zaltzman
    Test Match Special statistician

It's the lowest score with which a team has ever declared in a Test in England. The previous was 111 by Australia in the Oval Test on 2013.

It was the ninth shortest Test, in terms of ball bowled, in this country.

  7. 'It's been very extreme this week'published at 18:36 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

Joe Root talking to TMS about how to solve the bad light issue: "There’s so many different ways you could look at it.

"If the Test Championship used the same ball everywhere that would make it easier in terms of changing it around.

"The standard of floodlights have to be of a minimum standard but we’ve got to protect the game, as it is, as much as possible – I don’t want to change it too much. You don’t want to drastically change the game too much for potentially only an hour affected in a five-day game.

"It’s been very extreme this week – you’re not going to see many games this week.

"Maybe we could start earlier – start at 10:30 if we lose any play, that’s a possibility to look at in the future. It happens elsewhere but it doesn’t happen here."

Joe England captain Root at the post-match presentation on how to solve the bad light issue: "In England we might be able to start half an hour earlier. It’s something to look at for whoever is in charge of that. It’s been a very unusual week - it’s very rare a Test match is so affected."

On the pink ball: "There’s a time and a place for it to be used in a Test match - I’m not sure about swapping it in. I’m not sure if you could get a redder ball - it’s above my pay grade thankfully."

  10. 'It's experience for a young batting side'published at 18:31 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

England captain Joe Root talking to TMS: "It would have been nice to have a result possible at the end of today but on a pitch like that it was impossible really. Credit to Pakistan - in the first innings they got more than we would have liked them to and got themselves in a position where they were pretty safe once we had all that weather.

"We knew we needed to be professional today and put those partnerships on - it's experience in the bank for a young batting line-up at the top of the order and something different for them to battle with, on a challenging surface.

"Zak Crawley, in particular, played with great fluency on a wicket that was very difficult to feel in on and he was very good at latching onto any loose deliveries. I thought he played extremely well."

  11. Man of the match - Mohammad Rizwanpublished at 18:30 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

More from Pakistan wicketkeeper and man of the match Mohammad Rizwan: "I was looking forward to a good contest - we’ve worked hard for it but unfortunately we couldn’t play the full game.

"It’s the first time I’ve kept here but I’ve been using a tape ball because that wobbles too - I’ve been working hard on it."

  12. Postpublished at 18:29 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

England captain Joe Root at the post-match presentation: "The boys have coped with the delays the best they can. We were really excited for this week - a new challenge for us and it’s disappointing we couldn’t get more cricket in.

On Zak Crawley: "I thought he played excellent today. We spoke as a group about being professional - especially as a young top-order - it’s great for us to get through it. We’ve got that in the bank now for going forward. The partnership was high class on a difficult surface.

On the third Test: "All the guys are in contention for the last Test - we’ve got fantastic options to choose from. We’ll assess where people are at tomorrow, I think it’s always important to do that, and go from there. It’s a huge game next week wanting to finish the series and summer of as best as we can."

  13. Postpublished at 18:28 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

Pakistan captain Azhar Ali at the post-match presentation: "The best thing out of his Test is that we didn’t have to bowl too much and it’s a big Test coming up and hopefully we’re fit and ready."
